The document is called "White Paper on the Situation of the Cath olic Church in Poland.” It contains a foreword by Wladislaw Zylmski. The foreword surveys the perse cution suffered by the Byzantine Rite Catholic Church in the eastern Polish areas incorporated into the Soviet Union after the war. It states that the Byzantine-Rite Church lost 15 Bishops, over 3,500 priests and over 5,000 churches and chapels. The churches and chap els were either seized by the Sovi et regime or handed over to the (schismatic) Orthodox Church. The document gives these figures regarding the persecution of the Latin-Rite Church in Poland: over 1,000 priests, 15 Bishops and Apos tolic Administrators and one Vicar Capitular arrested 50 priests pub licly sentenced to prison terms, and over 100 priests missing. -------------------o-------------- 1700 Flee Red Nations For Austria VIENNA—(NO—At least 1,700 persons in communist countries managed during the last year to escape oppression—including re ligious persecution by crossing the border into Austria. Not included in the total are those who were picked up by Aus trian polite in the Russian-occu pied zone and had to be handed over to Soviet authorities, nor the presumably large number killed trying to cross the mine fields and barbed wire entanglements "pro tecting the freedom of the People's Democracy.” Two-thirds of the 1,700 came from Yugoslavia. The rest, almost evenly divided, were from Czecho slovakia and Hungary. Between them nearly all races and nationalities subject to com munist rule were represented. Most appear to have left their home countries primarily because they could no longer bear the gen eral conditions created by com munist oppression. Jesuit Foresees New Continent In Mid-Atlantie SOUTH ORANGE, N. J.—(NC— Geological forces now at work will change the surface of the earth far more than man's new-found atomic power, according to Father J. Jos eph Lynch, SJ„ Fordham Univer sity’s earthquake expert. “The mid-Atlantic seems ready to rear its head above the surface so that tourists will either change boats ... or sail through a second edition of the Panama Canal,” ther Lynch told a meeting of New Jersey Science Teachers’ sociation. "Russia,” he said, "may well be joined to Alaska as a continuous mainland through the uplift of her land mass that is now but a string of Aleutian and Kurile Islands. The islands of Indonesia may well be come a continent that will dwarf her Australian neighbor.” Fa the As- The Fordham seismologist ad mitted that such changes are spec ulative, but said that geological forces giving rise to such specula tions are very real. -------------------o------------------- Be Loyal To Our Advertisers Joseph Eisel, Jr Auto Painting GA. 4709 476 E. Indian Charter Change May Limit Conversions NEW DELHI, India (NO Fears are rising here that India will amend its constitution to bar conversion work by foreign missionaries. That fear is based on a new statement bv Indian Home Minister Kailas Nath Katju declaring that future missionaries coming to India will not eniov the right to make converts. Addressing a public meeting at Raipur, Mr. Katju said: "Missionaries now residing in In dia have the right of religious propaganda under the constitution, but others coming to India would not enjoy this constitutional facili- Mr. Katju cited the views of the late Mahatma Gandhi to support his stand. The revered Hindu lead er was a life-long opponent of pros elytization by Christian missionar ies. Mr. Katju stated that new mis sionaries coming to India should limit themselves to humanitarian and educational activities. They may preach Christianity, but not make converts, he added. A viewpoint similar to that of Mr. Katju was recently expressed by Indian President Rajendra Prasad. In a speech at Tura, Assam, he declared that Christian mission aries have the right to preach Christianity, but should not at tempt to make converts. Christian circles believe that the new policy violates the con stitution which assures that "all persons are equally entitled to freedom of conscience and the right freely to profess, practice and propagate religion." Christians declare that the right to spread the Gospel and make converts is inseparable from oppor tunities for foreign missionaries to work in other fields. "The crucial job in Japan is to spread the Church’s teachings on social and economic justice,” Fa ther Leo H. Tibesar, veteran nys sionary to Japan said. "Because the Japanese man runs into social problems every minute of the day. it is through the papal teachings that solve those prob lems that we will contact the Jap anese and convince them of the good of the Church.” Father Tibeaar »aid that tho basic problem of population can be solved only if underpopulated areas like Australia, New Zea land, New Guinee and Canada agree to absorb the two million Jepenese who should emigrete "The Japanese people don’t want communism but unless things im prove for them economically they may feel forced to accept the Red program as the only solution be cause it’s the only one they know,” he said, adding: "There are only two well thought out social and economic programs in the world today—the Catholic’s and the communist’s. The Japanese today are familiar with only one the wrong one.” Needs Of Latin America Cited By Priest-Editor MADRID (NC Father Iribarren declared that Latin America needs more priests to combat what he called three main dangers to the Faith there— communist propaganda. Protestant proselytism and the growing spirit of secularism. He recalled that after their ekpulsion from com munist-controlled areas in Asia, thousands of Protestant mission aries were “dumped all at once” into Latin America. According to Father Iribarren, Spa in could afford to send 2,000 I secular priests, 2,000 regular priests, and 6,000 Religious into the Spanish-speaking regions ef Centre! and South America. He wrote: “What would happen in Spam if, all of a sudden, we deprived our selves of ten per cent of our per sonnel? Probably nothing. And what would happen in Spanish America if we were to make this generous gesture of sending these 10,000 apostles there? Probably much.” Father Iribarren placed the number of priests in Spain at present at 29.580 22.087 secular and 7.493 regular and the num ber of Brothers and nuns at 17.205 and 63.267, respectively. He said the over-all total of 110.052 Span iards in religious life does not in elude Spanish missionaries sent to remote lands. Lack Of Vocations Pointing to the scarcity of relig ious vocations in Latin America, Father Iribarren said that two ma jor seminaries in Spain alone have 8,406 students, close to twice the combined total of 4,978 seminari ans in 19 Central and South Amei ican countries. Ordinations of sec ular priests in Spain each year, he added, are double the number of all Latin* America. The Spanish Hierarchy, Father Iribarren said, recognized the sig nificance of this "terrible contrast” by establishing the Society for His panamerican Priestly Cooperation, already ten years old, the group was recently renamed the Bishops’ Committee for Latin American Co operation. It has already assigned more than 130 Spanish priests to work in Isatin America, each of them for a five-year period. "But,” Father Iribarren asked "how much good is to be accom plished by sending a dozen or so priests a year when the Protestants have swarmed by the thou sands'”’ Father Iribarren devoted a great part of his article to refuting for eign critics, who. he said, have painted a dismal picture of the re ligious situation in Spain. Their conclusions, he explained, were based on a recent survey which showed that a great many Spanish workers have grown lax in their religious practice. Menzies declared last week. Speaking at the official opening of St. Edmund* Christian Broth ers’ College here, the prime minis ter said: "You will never produce a great school until you have people with the highest sense of their calling and a background of the eternal verities. "I do not believe that education can be pagan without being de structive. This has been shown in the 20th century, where it has led to the last limits of disaster.” His Eminence Norman Cardinal Gilroy, Archbishop of Sydney, blessed, the college before one of the largest groups of public fig ures ever to attend a Catholic func tion in Australia. Built as a war memorial to alumni of Christian Brothers schools throughout Australasia and the Pacific Islands, the college is the culmination of almost 20 years of planning for a Catholic second ary school for boys in the national capital. ----------------------------0---------------------------- Acting Superior Named TOKYO—CNC) Father Rogers Pelow, S.F.M., parish priest of Kita Sasebo, has been named Acting Su perior of the Scarboro Foreign Mis sion Society in Japan.
