RTEOI.S SERVICE” Parish On French Coast Served By Sea-Going Priests BOULOGNE, France (NO (NC)—Along the English Channel coast from Le Havre to the Belgian frontier live the members of an unusual sea going parish, served by sea going priests. Made up of some 5.000 fishermen and their families, who are often at sea, the parish is run by a group of Franciscan priests with headquarters here in Boulogne. Whenever possible the seamen meet for Mass ashore, landing at small harbors along the coast. But often when a fishing fleet sails on a long voyage a priest sails with it. He works with the fishermen, sharing the crew's hardships, and celebrates Mass aboard ship when ever weather permits. On feast days the Mass is broadcast by ra dio for crews on other ships in the fleet. At parish headquarters here a social center is maintained for the benefit of seamen. Among other things it helps to find them lodg ings. aids them with legal problems, while a group of doctors gives them medical care. A seamen’s home provides food and lodging for crews of ships in Boulogne har bor. The parish publishes a special periodical, “Land and Sea,” for fishermen and maintains a chape] for them. •Bought Converts’ Charge In India Is Proven False NAGPUR, India—(NC)—-Charges that Catholic missionaries are “buyirfg converts” in Madyha Pra. desh. He also denied charges that children were edmitted to Chris tian schools in Madhya Pradesh only if their parents were eon- The now discredited allegations are the basis of an official inquiry proposed by Madhya Pradesh gov ernment into the activities of Christian missionaries in the state. A committee for this purpose has already heen formed with not a single representative of the Chris tian community. EDDIE'S MARINE MART NEAR YACHT CLUB BUCKEYE LAKE, OHIO Catholics Told World Needs Proof Of God MILWAUKEE (NC) —Dr. Ver non J. Bourke of St. Louis Uni versity told 300 delegates to the 28th annual meeting of the Cath olic Philosophical Association that they had a job to do in convincing the world of the existence of God. Speaking on the "invalid proof* for God'* exisenco," Dr. Bourke said that "one of th* worst mis take* that can be mad* is to claim that God'* existence is self-evident to all men and that no further thought on the matter is required. It is simply not true," he said, "that all men actually assent to the existence of God a* He is conceived by Christians." Dr. Charles J. O’Neil, of the Marquette University philosophy department, was installed as the new president of the association. He succeeds Dr. James Collins of St. Louis University. Father Gerald Smith, S.J.. head of Marquette University's philoso phy department, was awarded the Cardinal Spellman-Aquinas medal of the association for 1955. "The problem of the existence of God," Dr. Bourke said, "is not to be solved by an exclusive use of logic or semantic*. It requires seri ous and orderly thinking, not mere ly on the meaning of certain word* or the content of certain ideas but on the thoroughly marshalled and intelligently understood acts of human experience." Dr. Bourke told the philosophers that “since one of the most popular types of contemporary philosophy is atheistic existentialism, the se rious consideration of reasons for accepting the existence of God is now more important for Catholic philosophers than at any previous period in the history of man.” -------------o----------------- W ant ads save time and money.
