Present barrier to the admittance of the Polish soldiers is a provi sion in the Refugee Act that says that the country from which the refugee will come to America must agree to take him back if he re ceived the I nited States Immi gration visa by fraud or misrepre sentation. The British Government, how ever, has refused to give such a guarantee and without it the form er Polish soldiers have no chance of obtaining V. S. visas under the present act, the committee said. To remedy the situation, the committee has suggested the act be amended so as to make it pos sible for the Poles to enter with out the guarantee from Great Bri tain. At the same time. Polish organizations in Great Britain are working to convince British au thorities tn change their position, the committee said. ANDERSON CLEANERS 1202 W. Third Av#. East From N W. Sandusky St. Cry Of ‘Rising Clericalism' Sounded By German Politico Catholic Paper Says Same Line Being Used By E. German Reds WASHINGTON (NC) The leader of a German polit ical party he claims to be a Catholic but declines as “a matter of conscience” to say whether he is a practicing one— has voiced alarm at what he calls “increasing clericalism” in his country’s political life. He is Dr. Thomas Dehler, head of the Free Democratic Party, who was Minister of Justice in the cabinet of Chancel lor Konrad Adenauer until last fall Nou the United States on a three-week visit under the| auspices of the Department ell State, he expressed himself as deeply concerned ‘‘by the use of Christianity as a criterion of po litical life” in Western Germany. (Dr. Oehler's visit here coin cided with an editorial in the Petrusblatt, Berlin diocesan week ly, saying that the “spectre of cler icalism” is being deliberately rais ed in Germany, with the possible result of an “anticlerical psycho sis” in Germany's internal policies. The editorial directly identified Dr. Dehler as foremost among those raising “the cry of ‘political Catholicism’.” It pointed to Ger many's socialists as allies of Dr. Dehler’s liberal party in fighting against the alleged “clericaliza tion” of public life. (The Petrusblatt editorial ex pressed concern that these liberal socialist maneuvers could lead to a new German “Kulturkampf.” This term dates back to the time of Bismarck. Germany s “Iron Chan cellor” who, beginning in 1871, at tempted to make the Catholic Church in Prussia independent of Rome and wholly subject to the State. (Slogan* like "clericalism” and "threatening Kulturkampf” are being increasingly used by com munist propaganda in the Red ruled East Zone of Germany. A recent propaganda broadcast said that "not only among Prot estants, but among many intelli gent Catholics indignation is ris ing over West Germany's cultur al policies which ar* dictated by political Catholicism in an ever more undisguised manner.”) Methodist Board Hears Report On Objectionable T5 DETROIT—(NC—“Many televi sion programs ar? objectionable from the standpoint of moral, eth. ical and religious content” said the Rev. John Q. Schisler of Nash ville, Tenn in an address at the annual meeting of the Methodist Board of Education here. He said there was an “urgent need for churches to develop spe cial television programs for chil dren because we have a responsi bility growing out of our total re sponsibility for the life of the child, to make a contribution to television programs for children in general” DELIVERY SERVICE HARDWARES SPEER’S MERCHANT DELIVERY Phone 52976 666 N. Ohio Hadley’s Furniture and Appliances 28 East Gambier Street Across The Street From The A & Market ft I 7 JBjM Dr. Dehler, when interviewed here, strenuously denied that his accusations regarding “political Catholicism” in Germany bear any resemblance to similar charges voiced against the Church in all communist-ruled Iron Curtain countries. In countries like Poland and Czechoslovakia the charge of po litical Catholicism” is made in a deliberate effort to suppress the Church, he said. Noting that the term has no such connotations Germany, Dr. Dehler acknowledg ed, in answer to questions, “the unlimited right of the Church to raise her admonishing voice re garding all ethical issues arising in public life.’’ At the same time, however, Dr. Dehler expressed his opposition to “recent developments” which he identified as attempts of the Church “to gain influence on po litical life through public or pro fessional institutions.” As an “ex ample” of the increasing “clerical ization” of public life he listed ef forts to set up a Catholic young farmers’ association, moves toward reorganizing Christian labor un ions. steps to insure the training of Catholic teachers in Catholic normal schools, and “pressure tac tics” in warning xojers against cer tain political parties. V«gu* Replies Regarding the question of Cath olic schools. Dr. Dehler denied fa voring “a state monopoly in educa tion.” However, he was vague in answer to questions as to the validity of parental rights, confin ing himself to the remark that this issue had been “distorted” in re cent debates. Concerning the question of obli gatory civil marriage, Dr. Dehler said he saw no reason why the 80 year-old German law requiring a civil ceremony before any religious marriage should be changed. How ever, he claimed credit for intro ducing a measure which would abolish the severe penalties for clergymen who assist at a religious marriage without a previous civil ceremony. Although the great majority of German constitutional experts, in cluding the government of West Germany, consider the 1933 Ger man Concordat with the Holy See as fully binding. Dr. Dehler holds its present status as “problemati cal.” ‘‘The churches in Germany have never been as free as they are at the present time,” Dr. Dehler said in conclusion. Denying any inten tion of provoking a new “Kultur kampf,” he said it was rather the churches whn are “creating an atmosphere” in which such a dan ger could arise. -----------------o----------------- Join your neighbors in the vol unteer parade An increasing num ber of Columbus men and women, old and young, are giving friendly help through the Volunteer Serv ice Bureau of Community Chest.
