Bishop, Beaten By Slav Reds, Still Critical GRAZ, Austria (NC) An aged Yugoslav Bishop, brutally beaten and manhandled by com munist ruffians last fall, is in crit ical condition in a hospital, accord ing to reports reaching here. The ailing victim of the Red violence is 81-year-old Bishop Lajci Budanovic, Apostolic Administra tor of Backa Yugoslavia. Special prayers are being offered for him in churches throughout his See. The people of the area some time ago took up a collection to enable their popular Bishop to go to a spa for additional treat* ment. However, the collection, which amounted to 100,000 di* nars, was confiscated by the Yugoslav government. At the time the regime suddenly "discovered" that the Bishop owed over 100,000 dinars "in back taxes" on churches in the area. Bishop Budanovic was attacked Sept. 5, 1953, while on a confirma tion tour at Sambor. Red-organized hoodlums clubbed the aged pre late. stripped him of his collar and cassock, threw him into a truck and spirited him away to an isolat ed farmhouse. He was held there for two days and then brought by truck and thrown into a side street of Suboti ca, his place of residence. He was discovered lying on the street, bruised, his clothes shredded, his eye glasses broken and his espisco pal ring missing. :—o------------------ It pays to patronize our advertisers. Special Marian Week Is Observed By Irish DUBLIN, Ireland (NC) Irish employers from Antrim to Cork joined in a week of ceremonies and functions special ly organized as a Marian Year tribute to the Mother of God. The week began on May 8 with a High Mass in the Cork City factory of Sunbeam Wolsey, Ltd., where “bosses” and men knelt side by side. The tribute was organized by the Catholic Societies Vocational Or ganization Conference, made up of representatives of various Catholic Action organizations in Dublin. The conference aims at applying the principles of the papal social encyclicals to the professional, in dustrial and agricultural life of Ireland. In particular, it seeks to promote just and harmonious re lations between industry and labor. Inspiration for the Marian Year tribute came when members of the C.S.V.C. took part last September in “factory feasts” held at the fa mous Vai des Bois Mills in France and at the Spa Lane Mills at Der by, England. They came home de termined that some effort should be made in the Marian -Year to ex press the devotion that Irish work ers and industrialists feci for the Blessed Virgin. Two Aspoct* The industrial tribute to Our La dy had two distinct aspects. First, a number of religious ceremonies took place in factories, employers, managers and workers participat ing in fraternal equality under the patronage of the local Archbishop or Bishop. Secondly caine a monetary trib ute, consisting of the voluntary sacrifice of an hour’s pay by the workers, supplemented by dona tions from management. The sums collected were to be sent to His Holiness Pope Pius XII, to be spent for charitable purposes at his direction. The second day of the Marian Week was highlighted by a Mass at the Athlone factory of Messers General Textiles, followed by a vis it to the famous Providence Wool- Dedicate First New Church In State Of Israel HAIFA, Israel—(NC)—The first new Catholic church in Israel since the establishment of the state was dedicated near here by Archbishop George Hakim, Greek Rite Bishop of Acra-Haifa. The church is in the village of Efia on Mount Carmel and was built through funds from American Catholics. It is dedicated to St. Elias because it is midway between the 15-mile stretch separating the Grotto of Elias from The Place of Sacrifice, where Elias shamed the prophets of Baal. Archbishop Silvio Oddi, naw Apostolic Delegate to Jerusalem, presided et the dedication. Msgr. Peter Touchy, Boston erchdiocesen priest now stationed in Beirut, Leb enon, represented the U.S. Catholic Near East Welfare Association and th* Pontifical Mission for Palestine at th* ceremony. He was given th* honorary title of “archimandrite" by Archbishop Hakim as a mark of gratitude for American Catholic Aid in th* erection of th* church. ("Archmandrite" literally means "monastery superior." But it is now mainly a title of honor con ferred on certain official* attached to the chanceries of Eastern Rite Prelate*. The honor carries with it varying privileges.) Archbishop Hakim expressed his deepest gratitude, for the aid re ceived from the Near East Welfare Association, and directed his thanks particularly to Francis Cardinal Spellman, Archbishop of New York, and Msgr. Thomas McMahon, the association's top officials. The new church is beautifully lo cated on a hill at the entrance of I Elia, a village one-third Catholic and two-thirds Drusean—a Moham medan-based sect. The entire vill age of 2.000 turned out for the ded ication. The main altar of the new church is the gift of an Arab-Amer ican, Elis Sayour of New York. 1 en Mills conducted by the Sisters of Charity at Foxford. In Duoim, Archbishop John C. McQuaid was scheduled to preside at a High Mass in the foundry of Messrs. Tonge and Taggart, attend ed by the clerical and factory staffs. The social side of the Dub lin ceremonies was to include an informal reception given by the Knights of St. Columbanus. In Dublin, also, a public meet ing was due to take place at the Mansion House, featuring talks by Bishop Edward Ellis of Notting ham, and Alan Turner, pioneer of the movement started in England to promote Catholic principles in Industry. Mr Turner is one of the directors of the Spa l^ne Mills. His French counterpart is Leon Har med of the Vai des Bois Mills. Workers in the North of Ireland also joined the tribute to the Blessed Virgin. Prior to leaving for a visit to Our Lady of Lourdes shrine in France. Archbishop Ger ald P. O’Hara, Bishop of Savdnnah Atlanta and Papal Nuncio to Ire land, voiced thanks to the Catholic Societies Vocational Organization Conference for the charitable of ferings pledged to be sent to the Pope in the name of Irish workers and employers. .!
