Sheen sleeping and after Peter denied Him, Our Lord once again called him "Simon” to indicate that he had fallen back to the old level. We wonder why we are in a “rut" why our prayers are with out devotion why we make no spiritual progress. The answer is simple. We are not disciplining ourselves, not stowing errant im pulses. giving too much rope to our selfish desires. Here are two simple ways to become more Christ-like, one taken from the Gospel, the other from the writ ings of St. Thomas Aquinas. 1) Take up your cross daily. 2) Med itate on the earthly life of Our Lord. Combining both when you make a sacrifice, such as doing without a luxury, see that it is used to make our Ix»rd known and loved. (NC) While Reno “burns the midnight oil” and roulette wheels whir in its dine dance-and-gamble clubs, a tiny group of nuns will be praying right in the middle of America's new nightlife metropolis. A monastery of contemplative nuns will be set up on Reno's main street—close enough to the city's gambling strip “to see the neon lights on Harold’s Club,” according to Mother Angela, superior of the Indianapolis (Ind.) Carmel, now in Reno completing arrangements for the new Carmel. Mother Angela and seven con templative nuns will come to Reno in the Fall to form the nucleus ol the new foundation. Contracts arc now being signed for purchase of a brick building on Reno’s Virginia Street with property suitable for a walled cloistered area. The Reno house, which will be the second branch established by the Indianapolis Carmel, will be set up at the invitation of Bishop Robert J. Dwyer of Reno. o- —.. -.— Alon* Some people seem to think that they can’t make a novena unless they leave home and get jostled by a few thousand persons bent on the same grace. Novenas can be private affairs, too. We surely ought to have a novena in mind for the Holy Spirit, and begin it the day after Ascension. Any pray ers will do if we don’t have some prayers in honor of the Holy Spirit at hand. The necessary item is the nine days without a lapse. Work up your own schedule of prayers, and stay with them, and you will be all set. Perhaps God and the Saints would rather have you make your own private novena it really shows your personal love and initiative. St. Gabriel Festival Planned For June 4-5 Catholic Authorities Take Stand Against Curtailment Of Rights NEW DELHI, India (NC) The campaign against for eign missionaries reached a new tempo as two more state gov ernments began harassing moves against them. Simultaneously, Catholic authorities of India took a firm stand against any possible curtailment of religious rights that may be implied in the new moves. Madhva Bharat (Central India) and tar Pradesh (United Pro vince) were the latest Indian states to display openly their anti-mis sionary policy. Earlier an investi gation was started by the Madhya Pradesh state government. The Madhya Bharat govern ment announced the appointment of and eight -member com mittee for the ostensible pur pose of inquiring into complaint* against Christian missionaries in the state. The specific charge re lates to the alleged use of "un fair means" by missionaries for converting people to Christiani ty. The committee, which is headed by a retired Hindu judge, has been asked to submit its report as early as possible. i I’- Big Plans are in the making for the St. Gabriel Festival which will take place this year, Friday and Saturday, June 4 5. Activities to interest all age groups will begin both avertings at 7:00 p. m. "Bozo" the clown and Aunt Fran of television fame will be on hand to entertain the young fry and stands of all kinds including out of-town donation stand will interest the older folks. In addition, there will be a grand prize awarded. Pictured above are committee members who are working on plans for the affair. They are, left to right, Thoma* J. Eichenrode Jay Lucas, co-chairman Father Clement Faistl, pastor of St. Gabriel parish Robert Gallagher, cheirman, and Stephen Devoss. Two New Indian States Open Drives Against Missionaries ly in a discussion on missionaries in the Uttar Pradesh legislative assembly. Dr. Sampurnanand, Hindu home minister of the state, asserted that the state government is aware that monetary inducements had been offered for some conversions. He said that 250 Hindus had been converted to Christianity by Ca tholic and Methodist missionaries in Mathura district during the past two years. A Hindu member went so far as to charge that “regular contracts” had been entered into by all con verts promising to return money taken bv them in the event of their reverting to their original faith. An expression of Catholic re action to these developments came from Archbishop Thomas Pothaca mury of Bangalore, secretary of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India, Th* prelate spoke strongly against any possible limitation of religious rights granted to minorities by the Indian consti tution, and denounced eny at tempt to curtail the essential work of Christian missionaries. He said such an attempt would amount to interfering with th* rights granted them by the con stitution of a secular stat* which assures religious freedom and equal protection to all faiths. The prelate dismissed as ab solutely without meaning the de mand that missionaries confine their activities to educational and humanitarian service. He pointed out that missionaries do not come to India in their personal capacity, but act on the desire to propagate the religion of Christ. Reconversion Drive Meanwhile, the Mahasabha, an ultra-Hindu organization, has initia ted a big drive for re-converting to Hinduism all Hindus who had been converted to Christianity since India's independence. The president of the organization announced that he was starting a $200,000 fund to promote the sud dhi (reconversion with purifica tion) movement. The Examiner, India’s oldest Ca tholic paper, has declared that the Christian community is living “in fear” in India. The paper expressed this view in comment on a recent circular sent out by Nehru's Congress party, admitting that “a feeling of uneasiness” is growing among the minority communities. The Examiner said: "We htve no voice in any council, be it dis trict or legislative, even when w* ar* affected in our personal, religious and educational right* We have to go to the aid of the Congress, which at the stroke of the pen did such thing* to u* that in 'persecuted countries' took year* to do."
