Victory over the maldistribu tion of the world's goods—the too great differences in the realm of things economic. 5. Victory over the spirit of ego ism. On these five principles, each of us can base a salutary examina tion of conscience. Do I hate anybody—any individ ual, any class, any race, any nation? If so, how can I be fair?—how a maker of peace? Let's get right down to cases. Do I. for example, automatically bristle when England is mention ed? Or Poland? Or ‘some other na tion? Do I assume, for example, that no Englishman is to be trust ed?—or no Japanese? or no Frenchman or German? Do I hate and distrust the rich? —or the educated? Or, conversely, the poor, the illiterate? Do I shrink from them? Such questions arise from the first and second points. Do I secret ly think that might really is right, —that any military step taken by my nation is necessarily all right? The fourth point ... Do I op pose the idea of immigration? Do I have a dog-in-manger attitude to ward those who would like to come to my country for a new start in life? Is my at titude, “I want all I can get let the other chap take care of himself?” The fifth point is more subtle, but it is the root of all the points at the root of all strife and war. Am I humble? If not, I’m a dead drag on mankind’s striving peace. To be an egoist is to oneself, and not to love God fellowmen. Here are the Pope's other in ternational principles for peace: 1. All nations have a right to freedom and security. 2. All nations should agree to dis arm. 3. International courts should have power to enforce international law. (You don’t like that? Well, the burglars would love it if we deprived our local courts of power to enforce law.) 4. The real needs of various peo ples must be recognized, and satis fied. 5. Both governments and peoples must acquire a deep sense of re sponsibility before God. What can you do to bring peace to the world? One principle is this—patriot ism must be right patriotism, not wrong patriotism. A great deal of patriotism is noth ing better than bad national pride and selfishness. It is not a virtue it is a vice a corroding sin. It turns a man into a fanatical nationalist, a hater'of other nations, a kind of national miser, hugging his own country to his breast, and peering hatefully at all other countries. 94*6 He rd were* Delta Power Toole Crane-Krieg-Flory Hardware 8.
