Weekly Papers
WASHINGTON (NO -A li
brary of weekly newspapers would
be established in the Library of
Congress under the terms of a bill
introduced by Senator Frederick
G. Payne of Maine.
The Senator said weekly news
papers of the United States “pro
ride one of the best available
sources of historical information
of the life and times of our peo
ple.’’ He estimated that there are
between 9,000 and 10,000 such
newspapers published in this coun
try, but that the Library of Con
gress receives only about 200 of
these and preserves only 25.

Give In The Name Of Christ
Or Gifts Are Wasted
by Bishop Fulton J. Sheen
The tragedy of life is not what
people suffer, but what they
miss when they suffer. Just as
there is “wasted pain” when it
is not linked to
the Cross, so
there are
“wasted gifts”
when they are
not given in
the name of
Christ. To give
because others
expect you to
give is not mer
itorious in
Christ. To
build a gymnasium to see your
name on its portals is not to win
heaven. To gain merit for heav
en, we must be in the state of
grace and do the giving for the
sake of Our Lord.
neighbor, and Me.”
Because the Director of the
Society for the Propagation of
the Faith is the representative
of the Holy Father’s Pontifical
Society for the conversion of the
pagan world, we solicit sacrific
es, not gifts. We do not want to
help lepers alone we want to
help you. We do not want to
alone build churches in Africa
we want to build Christ in you.
As St. Paul said: “If I distribute
all my goods to the poor and
have not charity or the love of
Christ, it profits me nothing.”
Next week we will tell you
how to remember our new ad
dress. We hope that you have
been saving your pennies.
GOD LOVE YOU to K.L. for
$15.30. “I am a convert and sav
ed this money by less smoking
and less theatre. I hope it will
help you in your fine work.”
to S.A.R. “I am enclosing a check
for $17.50. I accumulated this
sum by saving dimes all during
your TV series.” to B. M.
O’B. for $75. “Enclosed is 50%
of an unexpected bonus which
I promised to the Holy Father’s
Missions in thanksgiving for
many blessings.” ... to W.W.
for $8 “for a special favor grant

A Greet Gift
One oi the swellest gifts you can
give anyone is a spiritual bouquet.
A person who is not of the faith
isn’t able to understand what a
spiritual bouquet means, and, of
course, is missing one of the great
things in life. It is hard telling who
enjoys one the most the one
who offers it or the one who
receives it. It is one gift that real
ly counts on either side and makes
giver and getter both happy for it
means so much at the throne of
God. How about going to work on
one soon?
German Schools
Endangered By
New Legislation
BONN, Germany (NC) Four
Catholic Bishops and representa
tives of Protestant denominations
have reportedly agreed on plans
for joint action in the face of pro
posed school legislation in the
State of Lower Saxony endanger
ing the continued existence of de
nominational schools.
According to the German Cath
olic News Agency (KNA) the
Bishops of Osnabrueck, Hildes
heim, Paderborn and Muenster and
the Protestant Bishop Dr. Lilje of
Hanover participated in a confer
ence which took place near Osna
brueck. The meeting is said to have
been arranged by an "action com
mittee” consisting of both Catho
lics and Protestants.
The speaker of the West German
parliament, Dr. Hermann Ehlers,
a Protestant and together with
Chancellor Konrad Adenauer one
of the leaders of the Christian
Democratic Union, is also said to
have been instrumental in organiz
ing the meeting.
The government of Lower Sax
ony, headed by Hinrich Kopf, a
Social Democrat, has aroused wide
spread Catholic and Protestant op
position by its proposed new state
school law which would base all
education on a system of unified
schools (Gemeinschaftsschulen) to
be attended by children of all de
nominations. These plans have
been denounced as violating pa
rental rights and endangering gen
uine democratic freedom.
