The year produced two state championships. It also brought forth a bumper crop of individual stars. Probably the greatest achieve ment was climaxed on March 27 when New Lexington St. Aloysius was crowned state class basket ball champion. And the next shin ing moment came on May 29 when Columbus Aquinas annexed its sec ond straight golf title. But preced ing these events were a number of other noteworthy affairs. St. Charles Topped Football Columbus St. Charles wasn’t ex pected up come up with another season like they'd enjoyed the year before. And the Cards didn’t look it when pre-season practice started on Autist 20. But Jack Ryan’s men seemed to improve with each game, and after an early season loss to Columbus Central they roared on undefeated. St. Charles proved its right to a high rating by dropping Columbus Lin den McKinley, the eventual City League champs. Dennison St. Mary came up with one of the strongest teams in its history and topped Off the season with a win over arch-rival Dover St. Joseph. You can’t leave out Marion St. Mary who lost only one game and was unscored on ’till late in the season. And again New Lexington St. Aloysius stepped mt/) the limelight, for in football the Blue Knights won the six man Tri-County league in their first year at sport. the grid Revo the bas- Allen Made Coaches Paul Ebert Named Recipient Of Big 10 Athletic Honors COLUMBUS, 0 June IB-Paul (Stretch) Ebert, Ohio State Uni versity’s high-scoring basketball star and ace baseball pitcher, is the recipient of the Western Con ference medal, emblematic of high est efficiency in scholarship and athletics during his three-year var sity period. The Columbus South High product, who was all-confer ence basketball selection for three years and captain of the Buckeyes last season, holds all of Ohio State's individual scoring records for both single game and seasonal perform ances. Ebert, in addition to Big Ten recognition, was named on sev eral all-sectional and all-American squads. Ebert, who has been accepted in medical school, following a “B” av erage as an undergraduate, won 21 victories On the mound for Ohio State baseball teams during the last three years. He lost only seven for an average of 750. Ebert’s West ern Conference three-year record was 13-5, an average of .722 His stnke-out record this year was one of the highest NCAA circles— 94 in 84 pinings. Ebert who is a candidate for the all-American college baseball team, already has been named to the first District Four team ketball court have been told and retold many times during the past two months. Sparked by the great Mike Allen the Blue Knights roar ed through the District and Region al championships and into the state finals. There were many who doubted St. Al’s right to compete in the championship finale. Del phos St. John and Copley had been getting the rave notices all sea son long. But the Knights took their two gamtfs in stride and came out the victors, in as wild a fin ish as the tourney has ever pro duced. Many other fine teams stood, out on the hardwood. Newark St. Fran cis. paced by Frank Murphy and Bobby Franks, grabbed off first place in the Central Catholic League. The Green Wave enjoyed a highly successful season, being ranked eighth in the state at one point during the campaign. And who will ever forget the great Harry Fitzpatrick of Lancas ter St. Mary who led the Sham rocks for three years? Fitzpatrick was named to a first team all-Ohio berth, and fvell deserved it. Then there was the one-man gang at Somerset Holy Tnnity, Martin Walker. W’alker brought Somer set its best team in years. He was a stand-out in Perry county hoop circles for four seasons. There were others too, Mike An derson of Marion St Mary, Tom Bramlish and Chuck Mattingly of Zanesville Rosecrans, Dick Fond nest of Dennison St. Mary and Paul Bettendorf of Chillicothe Ca tholic Central. In Columbus it was Bill Stewart and Dave Barker of St. Mary, Joe Endres of St. Charles, and Ralph Reiser and Bill Nye of Aquinas. Rosecrans and Cards in Besebell Two outstanding pitchers led their teams into regional baseball finals, where the teams that beat them went on to capture the state crowns in the A and divisions. Joe Rotonda set records at St. Charles that may well stand for ever. The fast-balling lefty won games over a three year span. In cluded *fn that number were sev eral no-hitters and numerous one hit efforts. Rotonda tossed every game for the Carolians in their tourney quest before they finally bowed out to Mansfield the event ual Class A titalist. Tom Bramlish of Rosecrans set a glittering mark of no-hitters and one-hitters in his two year tenure as leader of the Bishop mound staff. He worked and won five games over a ten day period for the Hill toppers as they advanced through District and regional play before they were topped 4-3 by Waverly in the finals. Waverly went on to grab the toga the next week Terriers Set Record in Golf Columbus Aquinas became the second team in Ohio’s history to win more than one state golf crown when they came with a record low of 322 to successfully defend the crown they won last year. Paced by Gene Cardi, who was the Ter riers’ low man both years, they made up for their lone loss of the season by topping Upper Arling- TOO LATE TO CLASSIFY COLUMBUS For Rent Room for rent for gentleman.
