In Hong Kong a building program in the Chai Wan refu gee camp here has enabled near ly 200 persons to move from the dark tunnels of an old fort into new homes on a terraced hill side. The plight of the cave duell ers became extremely critical Men the roof of ‘heir tunnel quarters was torn up to permit construction above the site. Fa ther Paul Duchesne promised to build ten houses for them. The following day fifteen more fam ilies appeared at his door! All told, in a six week period, Father Duchesne finally built 39 new houses for 189 persons. "You can imagine the happi ness of the families at receiving these homes in the sun,” says Father Duchesne. “From the darkness of the tunnels to sun light and warmth of the terraced hills in six weeks has left them a bit breathless.” DON’T FORGET: AFTER JUNE 28TH WE WILL BE AT OUR NEW ADDRESS BUT UN TIL THEN cut out this column, pin your sacrifice to it and send it to the Most Reverend Fulton J. RELIGIOUS ART PRAYER BOOKS ROSARIES BOOKS GREETING CARDS Cobalt Device Furthers Atom Research At N.D NOTRE DAME (NO New radiation equipment cost ing less than a thousand dollars but with an intensity equal to $2.500,000-worth of radium has been developed bv atomic scientists at the University of Notre Dame and the Oak Ridge National Laboratory. A university spokesman said the new source—which makes use of radioactive cobalt—brings atomic radiation research within the fi nancial range of small colleges and research institutions. The design and construction of the new equipment were worked out by Dr. Milton Burton, director of the Notre Dame radiation proj ect, in collaboration with Dr. C. J. Hochanadel and Dr. J.A. Ghorm ley of Oak Ridge. Basically the device consists of a battery of 24 brass cylinders strapped around a central cyl inder and extending seven feet below the surface of a concrete floor. In four of the cylinders there is an arrangement of radio active cobalt slugs on three dif ferent levels. An operator may lower a sample in the inner cyl inder and expose it to radiation intensities up to the equivalent of 100 grams of radium. The construction obviates the need for the vast quantity of lead sheathing previously required. An other factor in keeping the cost low' is the construction of a spe cially-designed 3.000 pound car rier for shipping radioactive co balt from Oak Ridge. Ordinarily, such carriers are de signed for a particular piece of equipment the simple, uniform de sign of the new carrier will be used repeatedly to commute be tween Oak Ridge and institutions WE PAY YOU 6% INTEREST Let Your Money Work For You. Dr. Burton said the new equip ment may be used in research on the application of fission products, testing resistance of chemicals, bac teria and solutions to gamma radia tion testing of food and drug ster ilization. and for development of techniques of radiation-induced production and modification of polymers. -----------------o----------------- If you haven't bean reading the want ads, you have been losing money Read them and profit REMEMBER JULY 3 Annual Orphans' Picnic St. Vincent's NOW Whether there’s room for ail or not, school still keeps in our MISSION SCHOOLS. Religious training of children, like these Egyptian boys, is vastly important for the future of God’s Church in the mission lands of the Near East. Won’t you please add your mite each month to BASILIANS, our mission support club for schools? Members with their DOLLAR-A-MONTH do wonders among the poorest of God’s poor. Join today, or invite a friend or two to join with you. Your JUNE MITE goes to help the Poor Clares with their SL Joseph School at Kaipuram. India. BASIL is bis first of six years training at the monastery in Grottoferrata, near Rome. We must find a kind soul who will “sponsor” him by sending him the $100 needed each year for the costs of his training. You may send it in any installments. Won't you? Such charity merits the Lord's choicest blessing. WHO IS REMEMBERED IN YOUR WILL? IS YOUR LORD? FOOTSORE AND WEARY Our missionaries arrive at their mission outposts after a hot trek across the desert in Syria. Then they must go on foot from house to bouse to call their people to church. It must be done at once, for they must move on to other villages. Often the people are scattered widely. A mission bell, costing $100, calling the people over the quiet deserts would save the overtaxed energies of the priest and his time for his great work of teaching and administering to the souls that need him. Your mite when added to others will do a great mercy for them. More than 800 Palestinian REFUGEES look to our Holy Father for food, clothing, medicine, shelter and schooling for the children. Won’t you send him a mite? A family stretches a FOOD PACK ($10) for almost a week. We welcome your used clothes at our warehouse. Haswell St. A Eastchester Rd^ Bronx 61, N.Y. AID IN IRAQ We hope one day SISTER VINCENT will be like SL Vincent De Paul among her own poor countrymen. Right now her own poverty is a worry because her family can’t help her meet the yearly cost »S1SO of her two years training with the Dominicans in Mossul. You can "adopt" her by sending her this yearly sum in any install ments. You’ll never be forgotten. PETER AT ANTIOCH He established himself as bishop here before finally moving on io Rome, Today our missionary Sisters of Perpetual Help have a dispensary where daily the poor of this city find care for their broken bodies and Christ's love for their afflicted souls. They do marvels with $10 in medicines. A mite helps. ADORN MY ALTAR Our Near East altar society, the MONICA GUILD, supplies all the needs for the altars of our mission chapels.
