These Cardinals Gave St. Charles Fifth Straight Loop Title The win gave the Cards an unde feated season. They had notched the championship the week pre vious when they downed Columbus North two games, but interest was high in the contest because the Cards were undefeated. At usual the key to St. Char les' suctss was good pitching and strong hitting. Jack Batchek, who has done his share of the former, turned slugger last week and blasted a single, triple and home run. His sixth inning three-bag ger hit the left field fence at 368 feet on the first bounce. Ernie DeMatteis tossed a solid seven hitter at the Bengals. He was in trouble only once, when with the bases loaded he struck out the final East batter to end the threat. The win gave the Cards a 4*4 game advantage over Columbus North and East They tied for sec ond place with 10 and four marks while Uppei Arlington took tourth with a 10-5 performance. The victory was the 61st as against only six losses compiled by St. Charles over the lest five yeers. The league was organized in 1950. The Cerds shered the title with Upper Arlington the first season Since then they've been sole possessor of the cham pionship. St Charles’ other unbeaten team, the Babe Ruth leaguers, were all sei to go aftei the city champion ship either Thursday or Friday of this week when they tangle with the West Side Pirates in a two out of three senes The younger Carol ians have won nine in a row. Man ager Kenny Grimes said plans are underway to have one of the cham pionship games in Red Bird stadium sometime next week The line score: St. Charles 200 002 3 Columbus Fu.st 101 000 1 -7 9 2 3 7 4 Karnes PICNIC SUPPLIES Beer Wine Carry .Out NANCE'S SPORTSMEN'S SHOP Tackle Gung Ammunition 1542 W 6th Ave. Ki. 4972 Circleville BUYER’S GUIDE PLUMBERS A Drains sewers Electric Roto-Rooter Sewer and Dram Service. Sports of the Times St. Charles closed the baseball record books after last Saturday’s double-win over Columbus East and with the victories rang down the curtain on summer sports. But just two weeks from today the bell will ring for the starting of the fall campaign. August 20 will mark the start of football prac tice for the coming season. Then Dick Mattingly of Zanes ville Rosecrans, Bob McQuade of Columbus Aquinas, Forrest Shar rock of Columbus Rosary, Dave Wetta of Portsmouth Notre Dame, Ken Neville of Columbus St. Mary and Jack Ryan of Columbus St. Charles will start the long grind toward what they hope will be good seasons. Bob Fowle of New Lexington St. Aloysius won begin practice un til around the first of September for his six man grid squad. Fowle will have to go it alone for a while at least as his right hand man. Tony Lollo, will be married on Aug. 28 to Miss Julia Dreese of New Lexington. Miss Dreese is the sister of Dick Dreese, captain of St. Al s two years ago.
