This question was answered here
by Father Gordon H. Albion, not
ed Biblical scholar, historian and
author, in a national radio address
in which he stressed that the inter
national organization made up of
161 non-Catholic churches in 48
countries can never achieve its
fundamental aim of Christian uni
ty.
"Our absence from Evanston is
not explained by disinterest in
the aims of Evanston God for
bid but by the fact that
tho Catholic is convinced that
unity in Christ is reached only
by the authority of Christ," he
said.
“The Catholic Church could not
attend Evanston except to speak
with an authority which the
World Council does not even
claim for itself and which none
of its members would accept.”

Absence Of Catholics
At Church Convention
Explained By Scholar
LONDON —(NC)— Why does the Catholic Church stand
aloof from the second general assembly of the World Council
of Churches which is scheduled to open on Saturday at Evans
ton, 111.?
Father Albion was discussing
’•the scandal of Christian disuni
ty’’ during the broadcasting of a
Catholic evening service.
He said that, to their great cred
it, many of the denominations in
side Christendom had tried to solve
the problem of this multiplication
of man-made differences’ in the
past few years by forming the
World Council of Churches.
“Why, then, this apparent stand
offishness,’’ he asked, “on the part
of the Roman Catholic Church with
its 423.000.000 Christians united
in faith and worship to the Bishop
of Rome, whose authority they ac
knowledge as that of the Vicar of
Christ on earth, the successor of
St. Peter?”
"Every Roman Catholic, from
the Pope downward* is vitally in
terested in the unity of Christ's,
Church," Father Albion explain-

The intellectual and moral ma
turity necessary to be an effective
Catholic in the face of the de
mand* of the present day comes
first before all else, by having
a real appreciation of the Church
and of what membership the
Church means,” the Bishop said.
“We hear much talk of new
groups and associations and
league.' to defend the dignity of
man or the sanctity of the home,
or to advance true culture and en
lightenment, or to define Catholic
Action or to promote social jus

pointed out that a “person who
thinks of any of these things as
something apart from the Church
or as something that pious human
effort can bring to the Church,
or as benefits that some well-con
ceived organization can
on the Church, is a person

The Bishop defined the
tual maturity of a Catholic as the
'grasp of the rare privilege that
is his. alone or in organized com
pany with other Catholics to mam
fest outwardly for thp honor of
God and the blessing of mankind,
the fruits of the spirit which is the
life of the Church.”
Any Catholic would be intel
lectually immature "who, a* an
individual or a* a member of an
organization, think* that hi* ef
fort is a favor bestowed upon
the Church, to fill a need of th*
Church or to remedy some de
fect," the Bishop explained, end
went on to say that a Catholic
would be morally immature who
felt that "in view of modern
enlightenment and scientific
handling of problem* by himself
or his group, that he had a right
to advise the Church or even dic
tate to the Church."
“Hence it is,” (he Bishop reason
ed. “not only unintelligent, but
morally inept, to find the Church
stodgy, or old-fashioned, or need
ful of suggestion from alert moders
who are organized to give the old
Institution a New Look.
The correct lines for the partici
pation by the laity in the aposto
late of the Church were delineated
by the Hierarchy of the United
States over three decades ago,
Bishop Ready said, when “the
Bishops eagerly invited the laity
to join them in a strong, national
united expression of Catholic life.”
The means of fulfilling this full
Catholic unity was the foundation
by the Bishops of the National
Catholic Welfare Conference, the
Bishop recalled, and it “has been
effective in proportion to the
strength and cooperation of the la
ity through the Lay Organization
Department of the Conference, or
in more familiar
tional Councils of
en.”
“Thus the great
organization.” the Bishop contin
