That, in summary, was the answer of 152 radio-TV edi tors to a question asked by the Senate Juvenile Delinquency Subcommittee which is testing the link between TV violence and juvenile crime. Asked foi lheir views, most of the editors defended the TV indus try and opposed any regulation to bring about reforms. They placed much ofzthe blame on "weak-mind ed adults" who allow their children to look at anything and everything, and who even guide their children in bad taste by patronizing "mor bid-low-level soap operas.” The editors also scored the sys tem of "block programming"— scheduling by stations of "blocks’ of shows that give children a steady, day after day diet of the same programs. Some editors insisted that, while TV should police its own violations of good taste, the "burden of reform" is primarily on parents, schools, and church es. "If parents ban objectionable shows, TV must ban them too, if it wants to stay in business," it was stated. Senator Robert C. Hendrickson of New Jersey, subcommittee chairman, in his letter to the edi tors, stressed that "hundreds of parents have protested mounting crime and violence on TV’.” In commenting on the answers received, the Senator said. “Some of the editors have conceded frankly that they do not have first hand knowledge of the degree of harm, if any, that TV crime, hor ror and sadism inflict upon young sters. That is what we are trying to determine.” In their replies, most of the ed itors said they had no evidence, only "suspicions” that TV was con tributing to delinquency. Sir Hugh, who is a Knight Com mander of the Order of the British Empire as veil as of the Order of Gn-kory the rmpha-ized that the apostolate of the laity should be the constant preoccupa tion of all Catholic intellectuals. He spoke at the inaugural session, which was presided over by Arch bishop Fernando Cento. Papal Nun cio to Portugal Every profession can be the means of a personal apostolate. Sir Hugh said. In juxtaposition to this consideration he placed the modern "heresy of efficien cy." This heresy, he said, is blind to the necessity of moral values in the lives of men, and it ignores the fact that contem plation is an essential element to the inteqration of the profes sions with the primary vocation of the apostolate. ing of Pax Ro a Mass cele Cardinal Gon- The general meet mana opened with brated by Manuel calves Cerejeira.
