Pictured above, this still uncompleted edifice will hold 10,000 people. The Roman numerals at the extreme right have been placed there in lieu of permanent Stations of the Cross. Huge Cathedral Of Salt In Colombia Dedicated BOGOTA, Colombia (NC) Thousands of faithful gath ered at Zipaquira, about 30 miles from here, for the dedica tion of a vast cathedral-like church carved out of salt in a mine that dates back bevond the davs of the Spanish conquest Regarded as unique in the western hemisphere, the church is more than 300 feet below the earth's surface and is capable of accommodating 10,000 worshipers. The dedication of the church, which grew out of a chapel built for workers in the government owned mine, was performed by Bishop Tulio Botero Salazar, who afterwards celebrated a Pontifical Mass at the central altar over which hangs a rustic cross 27 feet high. The huge vaulted interior was illuminated during the rites by 150.000 watts of concealed light ing. narians from Bogota who sang Marian hymns. The dedication rites climaxed an eight-day Mar ian Congress at the conclusion of which an estimated 40,000 persons filed through the great subterranean church chanting Marian canticles and passing in veneration in front of the image of Our Lady of the Rosary, pa troness of the miners, which stands over a side altar. Although not yet quite finished, the church has long been attract ing crowds of visitors, said to number tens of thousands a month. The church is reached through an entrance in the Andean mountain side leading to a tunnel that pene (rates for a distance of nearly a mile. As large a the Cathedral of Notre Dame in Paris, the church occupies an area of over 53,000 square feet, and the nave and two aisles are nearly 400 feet long. The church was designed by Jose Maria Gonzalez Concha, who died a year ago, but the work was taken over by Alfonso Rodriguez, a fellow architect, who hopes to complete the structure within an other year. The church rests on six columns of salt rock, over which curve three 74-feet high arches which form the naves. In the left nave is the baptistry, while in the right is the altar of Our Ijsdy of the Rosary. At both sides of the main altar are 14 small niches for the Stations of the Cross. Iowa (NC) Former President Herbert Hoover cautioned educators against seek ing additional Federal aid for schools in a speech delivered at a public school dedication here. Mr. Hoover warned that “when the Federal bureaucracy begins in any field, it never seems to end. We are beginning now to cut down the size of this bureaucracy, and this effect won’t be nelped by a greater Federal participation in the schools.” He said he doubted if education, al groups “really want” the Fed eral government to help pay the cost of administering local schools. Mr. Hoover spoke following the dedication of an elementary school which will bear his name. ation. the Agony in the Garden and the Descent from the Cross are to be placed in an aisle that leads to the apse. Pedro, their leader, was bitterly anti-Ca tholic. Many of the staff were engaged in lawless activities of one kind or another. Tony had to wait for months to get the break he was hoping for. One of the staff wanted to get married. Tony helped with the arrangements and a church wed ding was agreed on. That meant that first the bride groom would have to go to Con fession. Evening after evening, Tony gave him instruction. It took a long time, because the man had very little knowledge of the Faith. Soon there were others coming to listen to the instructions. The final result: on the day of the wedding, ten others of the group expressed their desire to go to Confession. Later, ten more, including Pedro, followed suit.
