They are pictured holding the new flag of the asso ciation's Northern Ohio Chapter. Father Faistl conducted a memorial service for "Screaming Eagles'" killed in action. The General could say ,l\'ut." to the Germans that winter day at Bastogne because God was with the Besieged 101st Airborne Divi sion. That's the view of two former members of the Division—an Air borne Chaplain and the Medical Aid man. who served his Masses at Bastogne. and who met again in Cleveland last week for the first time in ten years. They were Father Clement Faistl, Pastor of Saint Gabriel Parish, Columbus, and a Veteran of both World War II and the Kor ean War, and ex-Sergeant Mike Friel, of Cleveland. They met at the Ninth Annual Reunion of the 101st Airborn Division Association in Hotel Carter. Recalling those weeks in Decem ber. 1944. w'hen the Germans drove the Bulge into U.S. lines and en circled the little town of Bastogne. Father Faistl and Friel agreed that only God's help enabled the 101st to beat off attack after attack with little more than machine guns and rocket launchers. Once, Father Faistl said a night attack was stopped when a bazooka man blew the track off a German tank at the corner of a church, where he’d expected to say Mass the next morning. The Priest added: ‘‘The big thing in our favor was that the Germans somehow over-estimated our strength. So. they kept probing instead of hit ting with a full-scale tank as sault.” The Chaplain and medic were with the Division’s 327th Glider Infantry Regiment: Father Faistl moved all around the 327's sector of the Bastogne defenses, offering Mass at a different place each morning. It was in the 327th's sector of the snowy Belgian woods that Ger man officers demanded the lOlst’s surrender and got a curt ‘‘Nuts’’ from Lt. Gen. Anthony McAuliffe. Division Commander. Father Faistl and Friel landed in Normandy together in a D-Day glider and spent much of the Euro pean Campaign together. Friel said the Priest frequently helped carry the w’ounded on litters and helped identify the dead. For the latter—the 2,232 mem bers of the 101st killed in action —Father Faistl conducted a me morial service during the reun ion. Ironically, despite his years of service with the 101st, it took an other war for Father Faistl to Rosarx School Paper Wins Ill-Catholir Rating The Catholic School Press Asso ciation awarded the Ail-Catholic rating to the Rosary High School paper, The Rosarian, giving a score of "excellent” in the fields of diffusion of Catholic thought, promotion of Catholic Action, ed itorial content, news and feature coverage, typography, layout and design. The Red regime is reported ly undertaking the canal to facilitate water traffic with the Soviet Union. The priests and other slave la borers have been taken from four “corrective camps” in the Lublin area. In all, there are reported to be 50 priests in these camps Most of them were removed from their parishes in east Poland short ly after the arrest last year of Hjs Eminence Stefan Cardinal Wyaryn ski. Priinato of Poland. Meanwhile it is learned here that the Red regime will exploit for its own purposes the projected visit of British Labor Party lead ers to Poland. Red propaganda is telling the people that the Labor Party visit means that British workers as such approve the regime. This propaganda, it is pointed out here, is designed to kill any hopes the Polish people may have of receiving broad help from abroad in any future attempt to overthrow- the communist regime.
