Top contest of the evening will be down at Portsmouth where Bob Mc Quade will take Aquinas to help the Trojans open the schedule. Aquinas, paced by the passing of quarterback Lee Miller, and bol stered by three all-city linemen from last year, hopes to make a better showing in the Ohio river city than they did a year ago when they suffered a bad beating from the state’s second ranked team. Generals Meet Bishops At Zanesville. West Lafayette will invade municipal stadium to meet Rosecrans Bishops, making the thud time in three jears that the two have played each other in the opener. Coach Dick Mattingly has a vet eran line but is concerned about his untried backfield. He has mov ed Chuck Mattingly from the half back spot he had last season into the signal calling slot. In last week’s preview against Malta McConnelsville, Mattingly was im pressive with his passing. Dennison St. Mary will travel to Olentangy neai Delaware, tonight with coach Paul Drotovich leading the Blue Waves tor the second lune alter a year’s absence. The team lost many ol its fine veterans from last year due to graduation. Drotovich thinks it will lake a few games betore he knows what the squad can do. Rams Meet Rambler* Columbus SI Mary will travel to Dover where St. Joseph will be waiting. The Columbus school tig ures to do a little better against St. Joseph this year Last year the Ramblers, paced by Ralph McIn tyre, ran and passed St. Mary into a 25-0 defeat. Coach Ken Neville will call on Bob Paulus, senior quarterback, to direct his attack while Joe Droto voch, St Joseph mentor, will be hoping to see his own offense move. Particularly pleasing to Coach Forest Sharrock was the 171 yards Rosary was able to move on the ground. St. Charle* Take* "Trip" Columbus St. Charles will “trav el" to Bexley where the Carolians will try to stop the high powered Bexley attack that rolled up twen ty points in last week’s preview win. Dav ton Opens Against Tough Bowling Green DAYTON,—Coach Hughie De vore’s University of Dayton Cholo rophyll Kids, 19 sophomores green, swing into action this week as col leges across the nation begin their football schedules. A new era in Flyer football opens with this season as Devore, former Notre Dame captain and later head coach, is beginning his first year at Dayton with his staff of Joe Sheeketski. backfield coach Herb Dintaman, line coach, and Clive Rush, end and frosh coach. Dayton has also erected a new lighting system and night football returns to the Hilltop after a four year absence when Bowling Green University opens the Flyer season at 8:00 p. m. tomorrow night. apt. Jimmy Shafor, senior guard from Hamilton. O., heads the 36 players Devore expects to have on hand Saturday. Shafer, who calls defensive signals for the Flyers, car ried the ball last year almost as often as some halfbacks. He recovered six fumbles: inter cepted a pass and averaged 3.5 yards in carrying the ball twice on guard-around plays. The Flyer captain is one of six seniors. However, the entire squad is “frosh" to the new coaching staff. Greenness will definitely be a handicap to the Flyers but it may be offset to some degree by eagerness. Two sophomores, Bashful Billy Smith, halfback from Hamilton. O., and John Kozlevchar, end from Cleveland, O., are expected to be in the starting eleven and other newcomers are very much in the picture. Besides Shafor. the senior vets on the squad are: Jimmy Spoerl, only seasoned quarterback, also from Hamilton. O. Chuck Guida, 168-pound quarterback from Phila delphia Jim Haggerty, first string end, now moved to fullback. Sayre, Pa. Jim Martin. 205-pound guard from Toledo and Vince Werl, a double-letter winner at tackle and now Shafer’s running mate at left guard. Werl, a 220 pounder, is from Pittsburgh.
