News Service) JERUSALEM (NC) The Marian Year has seen the start of preliminary work on a long cherished project the re building of the famous Church of the Annunciation in Naza reth which ranks as the world’s most important Marian shrine. With the approval and en couragement of the Holy See, the Franciscan Custody of the Holy Land has undertaken to replace the present modest church with a great new basili ca on the spot where the Angel Gabriel spoke to the Virgin Mary and which thus became Christiani ty’s oldest Holy Place. The initial work now hand in volves the removal of small mod ern buildings which have grown up around the Church of the An nunciation, especially since 1730, when the present provisional shrine was hastily built by the Franciscans who had to meet a deadline set by authorities during the time of Turkish domination. The humble church, which we* to become familiar to thousand* of pilgrims, was erected on the site of the splendid basilica built over the Grotto of the Annuncia tion by the Crusaders in the 12th century.. This basilica, which was destroyed by the Mohammedan* in 1739, had replaced another church known to have stood over the holy shrine a* early as A.D. 360, not many year* after Chris tianity had triumphed in the em pire of the Caesars. The excavations now under way near the present church as a neces sary preliminary to the eventual building operations planned are ex pected to reveal long-hidden relics of the earlier churches. This work of uncovering vestiges of the past is a continuation of that carried out some 40 years ago by Father Proper Viaud, O.F.M., French Vicar of the Holy Land Custody, in collaboration with Brother Se bastian Kersting, O.F.M., of the Cincinnati (Ohio) Franciscan Pro vince of St. John the Baptist. en, Stolen Face. Meanwhile. Osservatore Romano. Vatican City newspaper, twice re ferred to the fact that the Pope “has not yet completely recovered” from his illness of last winter and that he is suffering from a “pass ing indisposition.” The condition of the 78-year-old Pontiff is regarded by prudent and informed people here as serious, but not alarming, at the moment. The seriousness of his condi tion is attributed to threo fac tors: his advanced age, hi* recent medical history, and hi* own re fusal to ease his heavy schedule and his taxing round of audienc- The Holy Father’s personal phy sician, Dr. Riccardo Galeazzi Lisi, was quoted by an extremely well informed source as sajing that the Pope is not sick, but “tired” from crowded activities which would wear down anyone who did not have the Pontiff’s nearly nervous system. perfect i of his i has in- Despite the injunctions medical adviser, the Pope sisted on maintaining his ingorous program of private and general audiences, although on a number of occasions he was obviously tired to the point of exhaustion. When it was noted last week that the Holy Father had seemed some what “low” for several days, it was arranged that he should spare him self the exhausting effort of talk ing half a dozen different lan guages to the pilgrims gathered in the courtyard of Castelgandclfo for the general audiences on Thurs days and Sundays. Shortly before the Thursday audience began, Jesuit Fathers from the astronomical observatory at Castelgandclfo announced various languages that the Holy Fa ther would limit himself to impart ing his blessing. But when the Pope found himself again in the presence of a large throng of cheering people he went through his usual procedure, speaking for at least 35 minutes. On the regular Sunday audi ence, however, the Pontiff heed ed the advice of his doctor and refrained from speaking. Thou sands of pilgrims, among them a large group of American sai lors, gave a tremendous cheer when the Holy Father appeared on the balcony overlooking the courtyard. The Pope waved at them and raised his arms to impart his bless ing. Then he withdrew and return ed several times in response to the continuing cheers. Several thousand other pilgrims who could not find room in the courtyard had gathered in the town square. They, too, were greeted and blessed by the Pope, from a front window of the papal palace overlooking the square. It was reminiscent of last spring when the Holy Father during his convalescence regularly appeared at a certain hour at the window of his study overlooking St. Peter’s Square, greeting and blessing the crowd gathered below. It is reported on sound au thority that the Swiss specialist, Dr. Paul Niehans, has returned to Switzerland after spending a few days with the Pope. It was said that he would return to th* Pope's side again after about week. Plaisir, One Summer of Happiness. It is known that his doctor and others around him are watching the Pope more closely, and keeping him quieter, even insisting that he spend much of his time in bed. There was a report that the Pope had suffered an attack of hiccups, which was one of the symptoms of his illness early this year. It. would appear that there real ly was a slight attack of hiccups, but it did not last long. What chief ly worries everyone is simply the undeniable fact of the Pope’s ad vanced age which makes any phy sical trouble a serious matter. This factor has led to hasty and exag gerated speculation, and some er roneous reports, but the Vatican itself maintains its usual extreme reserve on the question of the Pope’s physical condition. -----------------o---------------- USE AND ABUSE The only thing some young peo ple are getting out of school is a bit-up pencil. o--------------- It Pays To Use Times Classifieds ELEVATORS Oil Hydraulics Electric Dumbwaiters Hoists Capital Elevator & Mfg.
