Clement Englert, C.SS.R. (Written for N.C.W.C. News Service) A good deal has been said about the origins of the Ori ental rites and of their presence in America. An interested person gets to the point of asking: “What makes an Eastern Rite differ from ours? What does an Oriental Mass look like?” Obviously, a small review of this kind cannot give any thing like a full picture of Mass in each of the rites. Since the Byzantine Rite is by far the most widespread, and is more over the rite of the I krainian/Catholics who are sponsoring lhe National Maiian (ongie»s of the Eastern Rites in Philadelphia from October 22 to 24, we shall confine ourselves to describing Mt. Many of these lea lures obtain in other rites too and where they do not, chances are that the Eastern Kile in quest ion follows the Roman usage. ,4 Byzantine Catholic makes the Sign of the Cross in manner slight ly different from ourselves. The hand moves first to the right shoul der and then to the left. The tips of the thumb, index and middle fingers are held together as a sign ot belief in the Holy Trinity— three Persuns in one God—while the remaining two fingers are clos ed together unto the palm of the hand as a sign of faith in the two natures, human and divine, that are united in the one divine person of Jesus Christ. As a gesture of piety this Sign of the Cross is made again and |gain during a Byzantine service. Usually it is made by the priest and the people whenever mention occurs of the Persons of the Holy Trinity. Il is also made in conjunc tion with a bow—more or less pro found, depending upon the piety and physique of (he worshipper instead of a genuflection. The priest blesses the people with his hand six times during the Mass. In giving a blessing the priest holds his lingers in a ritual ly prescribed position, that is, he forms, with the five lingers of his right hand, the letters IC-XC, which are the first and last letters ot the sacred names -Jesus Christ ■—in the old Greek alphabet. The index finger points straight out to form I the middle and little fin gers curve to form twice the thumb is crossed over the fourth linger to form X. This symbolism is a reminder that the priest acts in the name of Jesus Christ, and that all blessings flow from Him. The Byzantine vestments re semble the Roman ones in ori gin. The stole is long and joined together in the front the cinc ture is a band of cloth matching the other vestments instead of a maniple the priest wears a cuff on each forearm the chasuble resembles a Roman cope, with the front solid across the chest and the lower front cut away. Both the Roman and the Byzan tine chasuble had the same ori gin: the original chasuble fell to the floor on all sides. In the West the sides were gradually cut off to facilitate the priest's movements in the East the low er front was graduaally cut off for the same purpose. In the Byzantine Kite there is no strict sequence of colors. Tradition ally the rule is slated, bright col ors are to be used on feast days dark colors are proper for days ol last or of mourning. Usually black was used lor funerals and white for the Easter season and lor Sun days. In ancient times this rule was carried out by using chiefly two colors: white and dark red, and these are still the most frequently used in Byzantine churches. How ever, light blue, yellow, gold, and pink are often used for white, and dark blue, green, purple or violet are used for red.
