There are still some 30,000 men unaccounted for. By October 1 the Vietminh had not released Msgr. Jean Arnaud, Prefect Apostolic of Thakhek. or any of the three French priests taken with him. They have releas ed a few Vietnamese priests and one French Cistercian. But that leaves scores—maybe a full hun dred—of Vietnamese priests, a French Sister, five Vietnamese Brothers still due to come as well as Monsignor Arnaud and his group. (2) The Vietminh agreed in Geneva to "authorize and assist" all who wished to leave their zone, to do so. They have*violat ed this from the start. They are violating it more openiy and more aggressively now than they did in August. The minority of refugees who succeed in making their way back through the Red cordon tell how the Vietminh hold the people back. They do not allow them to sell their house or land. In some plac es they bar their way physically and drag them off the road. Nobody with children is allowed to use any kind of outward-bound transportation. That means no fam ilies may move. It is impossible to go any distance in the north Viet nam delta without having to cross streams and rivers. Business Announcements Z-30 Appliance! ELECTRIC APPLIANCES Drive to Dunean Fall* A Save W. Ohio British Convert Asserts “It is essential,” continued Sir Arnold, “that Catholics realize their common interests and exer cise self restraint in retaliative stories which make for bad blood 31 Chinese Priests Are In Peking Jails HONG KONG (NO— Thirty-one Chinese priests, 21 of whom were arrested this year, are at present in Red jails in Peking, according to two Swiss and one Belgian priest who arrived from Tientsin after having been or dered expelled from commun ist China. Th* priests recalled that when the British Labor Party delega tion led by former Prime Minis ter Clement Attlee visited the Tangshien coal mine, police came before hand to the Chines* pas tor to coach hin on what he should say to th* delegates. Th* priest was ordered to answer th* visitors only in Chinese. He was warned not to say anything against the government but only to tell them how many Catholics he had under his care, how many attended religious services, etc. When Attlee and his companions came, the expelled priests stated, they got the “correct answers" from the Chinese priests while alert guards stood by. Both Father Manhart and Father Brun said they experienced little difficulty until after the mass ar rests last March of Chinese priests who refused to cooperate with the communist sponsored so-called in dependent church. They said that on September 11 they were ordered to leave China within a week be cause they had “opposed” the com. munist government and were against the "patriotic church” movement. Father Stassen, who was born in Herve. Belgium, and came to Chi na in 1948 reported that he was told by police he must sign a re quest to leave the country. When he refused he was cursed as a fool and taken to Kalgan. where he was tortured and his inked fingers pressed to a document saying he freely requested permission to quit the country WE PAY YOU 6% INTEREST Let Your Money Work For You. Catholics Can Better Relations Between America And Britain WASHINGTON (NO Only Russia can gain by deeper disagreements” between Britain and the United States, Sir Arnold Lunn said here in an address at Georgetown University. He said the essential thing was to take with good humor the “occasional displays of friction” between the two countries. “Catholics can help but seldom do,” he said. “Perhaps because Catholics are accused of allegiance to an external authority, they are over apxious to stress their national prejudices,” said the British author whose book “Now I See” made him one of England’s most famous converts. He was converted in 1933 by another well-known English convert and writer. Msgr. Ronald Knox. between England and America.” The author of more than 40 books was the first speaker in the 1954-55 Gaston Lecture Series at the Jesuit university here. The writer thinks the British are more realistic and less emo tional about Anglo-American dis agreements than the Americans.” He said the British realize the area of essential agreement is very large. “They have had a lot to put up with from America since the war,” said Sir Arnold. “Constant and ignorant attacks on British Colon ialism little or no support when we were hard pressed in Persia, and what hurt us most, in viting our Dominion Australia but not inviting us to the Pacific Con ference. “Equally.” he continued, “the Americans have had a lot to put up with from us for example, the insults of the Bexan faction. On the balance. 1 feel America has had more to put up with than we have.” Sir Arnold said th* influence of Christianity was greater in England in the 19th century than it is today. Ha expressed belief that it was a declining influence "whereas today the influence of Christianity is increasing and this for many reasons: “1. The shallow optimism of those who hoped that science would take the place of religion and guide the world to Utopia has been shattered by the atom bomb. “2. The results of physical re search have had a great influence in wrecking the traditional mater ialistic philosophies based on a misunderstanding of science. “3. The tragic failure of the ex periment of substituting .dentists for priests and atheism for Chris tianity in Soviet Russia has predis posed young people to re-examine the ease of the supernatural.” He attributed “a general cultur al decline” in England in part to radio and television. “Where there is no vision.” he said, “the people perish and where there is televi sion. the vision fades. "Great art," he continued, "is the flower of e period of confi dent hope end strong religious faith. We live in en age of dis illusion and our poets and artists cannot compare with those of the 19th century. On the other hand, criticism flourishes in an age of disillusion and our best critics are far superior to those of the 19th century. The British author had a few words to say about the socialists: “It was the extreme pacifism of the socialist before the second World War that gave Hitler his splendid chance. They are repeat ing the same folly today.” Of the Attlee tour he said: “At lee went to Peking not because he has any real affection for com munists but because he is fighting for his own position in the Labor Party against Bevan who appeals HILLS CAB CA 1-1313 Safe Courteous Service No Charge tor Extra Passengers to all those who are terrified of the atom bomb and who believe that by disassociating themselves from America they can ensure they won’t be bombed.” ‘•The great majority of the Brit ish.” said Sir Arnold Lunn, “sup port German re-armament and a firm line against Russia.” InVillage's most complete food market TARPY'S om APEX MARKET “WE DELIVER** 2140 Trament Center HU. 84937 HU. 8-8424 BUSINESS ANNOUNCEMENTS RC-30 Construction Materials CONCRETE BLOCKS Reedy Mix Concrete—Sand and Gravel Briek and Tile—Building Material* BASIC CONSTRUCTION MATERIALS Phone 8-2172 Chillieothe. Palni CHILLICOTHE, OHIO God Love You Christmas For The Missions Comes On October 24 by Bishop Fallon J. Sheen Mission Sunday is October 24. It is Christmas for the Missions, for that is the day when your sacri fice, given for the love of Christ, begins to bring Christ to those who sit in iarkn ess and in want. The very minute you make the sacrifice it be gins to draw souls to their Saviour, be cause sacrifice eloquently begs grace from God for those in need of it. That is why Bethle hem and Calvary are so very close ly joined. If you wish to climb a tree, the blossoms, the leaves and the fruit are unimportant. The Cross was a tree without greenery. It was only for climbing. “If I be lifted up, I will draw all nen to Myself.” The leaves, the blossoms, and fruit we sacrifice for the Missions then, we mount the Cross unto Him— It will be a Sunday morning charged with expectancy in the Missions, where priests, Sis ters, brothers and lay missioners will be bowed in prayer that you make a true sacrifice. The little angel of the Missions will be riding the collection basket begging for 100,000 missionaries, 90,000 lepers, 60 million sick and needy, who re ceive care from our missions, and one billion who have not been reached yet by the sweet Names of Jesus and Mary. Our special “God Love You” greetings are being saved this week, getting ready for the job of super-thanking all those who enter into the spirit of Mission Sunday. Father Kunsch died last October, Father Bru neau last June. The two priests were professors in the junior seminary of Buichu vicariate, when they were captured in June, 1953. Father Kunsch had come to Buichu from Belgium in November, 1950, and Father Bru neau in September, 1951. They were held with other pris oners, including Vietnamese priests. A Vietnamese priest was with each of them at the hour of death and gave a last absolution. Th* Vietminh chained the priests' hands and feet. The chains were taken from th* two Belgian missionaries only in their last days, when they were dying of illness brought on by hardship and undernourishment. Three Vietnamese priests of Buichu vicariate and one from Bac Ninh also died of illness. COLISEUM GROUNDS COLUMBUS. OHIO 10 BIG DAYS—BR|„ OCT. 22 THRU. SUN..
