Russia May Bring Back ‘Madonna’ To Germany BONN, Germany (NC) One of the world’s most famous paintings of Mary Raphael’s supremely beautiful Sistine Madonna is expected soon to be brought back from the Soviet Union to its centuries-old home in the Dresden Pic ture Gallery. Nine years ago, the masterpiece of the Italian genius, who is regarded as the greatest painter of the Renaissance, was shipped off to Russia, together i with the better part of the con tents of the Dresden gallery. It is at present on display at the Hermitage, the art gallery in Leni grad. Dresden, the capital of Sax ony, is located in communist-ruled Eastern Germany. A statement issued by the direc tor of museums in Dresden read in part: “The Sistine Madonna will be returned after the Dresden picture gallery has been rebuilt, peace has been restored, and the dangers threatening such irreplace able works of art have been re moved.’* Art lovers here commented that while the statement was rather vague, it at least dispelled German fears that the Soviets had con fiscated the picture for good, either by way of reparations or as “war booty.” When the Russians entered Dresden on May 8, 1945, the great er part of the Dresden Picture Gallery had been moved to Castle Weesenstein in Saxony, while the Sistine Madonna was storred in an unused tunnel at Pirna, near Dres den, as a protection against air raids. Raphael, who painted many famous Madonnas, executed his Sistine Madonna around 1513 for the monks of San Sisto in Piacen za, Italy' on a commission from Pope Julius II. In 1754. the picture was acquired by Augus tus, Elector of Saxony, at a cost of 20,000 ducats, and presented to the Dresden gallery. The painting, believed to have been inspired by the Salve Regina, represents the Virgin holding the Child and advancing in clouds com posed of the faces of cherubs. Kneeling at the right is Pope St. Sixtus II. patron saint of the della Rovere family in Italy, to which Pope Julius belonged, while at the left is St. Barbara, protectress against sudden death and impen itence. Edgar Hoover, director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, told a Catholic University of America homecoming banquet gathering that ‘what we need most in this country are the things unseen spiritual devel opment, moral power and character.’* Mr. Hoover spoke after receiving the Cardinal Gibbons award for 1954 from the university's alumni association. The citation described him as a “great civil servant in the splendid tradition of the statesmen and the churchmen who have molded our national charac ter, held high our ideals and main tained stability in our communi ties.'’ “One real 'challenge that con fronts us, "said the I. director, “is that all schools and colleges should place more stress on truth, character, wisdom, honesty apd faith.” Mr. Hoover thinks “there are many seemingly well-educated and intelligent people in our coun try who have not yet awakened to the realization of the world wide perils which are a potential Heat to uur own peace am1 security There are still too many citizens who are prone to scoff and imdei estimate Ihe Uommunixl mrii ace “Pseudo-liberals, who seek tu conceal themselves behind the cloak of liberalism, have been be guiled, captivated, and perverted because they have not been con scious of the horror, duplicity and godle.ss.ness of atheistic commun ism. The eager readiness of some in this group to attack everyone and everything related to the efforts to expose the communist conspira cy in this country is hardly the mark of a true ‘liberal.’ Indeed, the true liberal is opposed to ev erything communism represents for the very nature is the antithesis of Poje of communism liberalism.” Answering the charge of “some very articulate people" that nation al security is incompatible with personal freedom, Mr. Hoover said Stresses Church's Love For Workers CASTELGANDOLFO, Italy (Radio, NC) The Church is vitally interested in the ec onomic welfare of the worker, because she believes that free dom from excessive worldly cares helps him to lead a bet ter Christian life and to keep his eyes fixed on his eternal destiny. This was the message given by His Holiness Pope Pius Xll at an audience to a group of Spanish workers from Barcelona, He told them the Church has always been interested in the problems of labor and of the worker, and has laid (jown vital principles which must always be the basis for any true solution of them. “The Church,” the Holy Father saicL “fight* for a more equitable distribution of natural goods, in. sisting primarily on a just sal ary which is sufficient for the worker and his family, and per mits a margin of sav’ng so as to ensure the future.” “But let Us add onct more that the Church desires that all mater ial improvements should have for their basis a previous intellectual and moral elevation, for man dues not live on bread alone.’’ Mallee Of Lanutiagt I lit* Long Anti Short Of II BA, Fiji Islands “If yoti like a short Rosary, come to Valukuu la,” says Columban Father Patrick J.
