Bishop Ready also lamented the closing of St. Francis Hospital, and expressed alarm over the lack of hospital space in the city. For St. Francis Hospital, operat ed by the same religious commun ity which operates St. Anthony’s. Bishop Ready also had words* of commendation. He asserted: “In the joy of this dedication, there is a sombre note, as we think, not without sorrow, of the passing of the sister institution of St. Anthony’s, the historic and be loved St. Francis/HospitaL And yet the sadness of this thought is fleet ing. For if one noble institution brings its service to a close, we see here another extending its ca pacities to make up the loss. "The force of circumstance which has rounded out the work of St. Francis Hospital cannot dim the record of many golden years nor lessen the value of its contribution to the service of God and men in this communi ty. These facts stand forever, finished and complete. St. Fran cis, after decades of distinguish ed and devoted service to Co lumbus, has fulfilled its honored destiny. It has seen its task ac complished." In commenting on Columbus hos pital needs, Bishop Ready observ ed that in adding the new 120-bed wing to St. Anthony’s, the Sisters of the Poor of St. Francis have as sumed a debt of $700,000, one-third of which was provided by the Unit ed Hospital campaign. He noted that $100,000 of the $332,000 furnished was used to ward the general renovation of the old building. "The plain, blunt statement of fact is that Columbus is present ly mere than 800 beds short of its minimum needs. The continu ally rising metropolitan popula tion makes this situation a c-it ical community problem. Interpretation Of The Propers For The Sundays Of Advent Although a great movement is in force toward greater use of the missal at Mass, up to now there has been hardly any literature explaining the vital meaning of the drama of the Mass to the Mass goers. This series of articles is designed to interpret the propers of the Mass for the Sundays during Advent. Adapted from COM PANION TO THE MISSAL by Sister M. Cecilia, O.S.B. (Bruce), they bring to life the propers of the Masses—the real significance of the reader’s participation and its dynamic effect upon his life and ac tions. Tkird Sunday In Advent ‘The Lord Is Near- INTROIT As we enter this morning for the Sacrifice, Mother Church greets us at the threshold with the glad news, “The Lord is near!” This is why she laid aside her purple vestments of mourning and decked her altars again with flow ers. Now she can tell us over and over again, as she does in both Introit and Epistle, “Joy to you in the Lord: again I wish you joy.” Then, knowing how slow we are to lay aside our worldly worries, she enlarges her theme, adding “Noth ing must make you anxious.” We really can leave all our troub les in God’s hands, for He directs everything to our ultimate good. Then we remind ourselves, in the psalm verse, of how much God has already done for us by the Re demption and all effects on the world in which we live today: “What blessings, Lord, thou has granted to this land of thine (by redeeming grace), restoring Israel from captivity”—that is, we have been freed from our captivity, re leased from the bonds of sin. COLLECT—At this time of year the world wrapped in wintry gloom is a fitting symbol of our minds, darkened as they are by unbelief and sin, amidst which we are liv ing. Wherefore we pray: “By the grace of thy coming, light up (this) darkness of our minds” now in this Mass and later at Christmas. EPISTLE—Rejoice, for “the Lord is near!” This theme of this Sun day’s Mass ought to re-echo in our hearts all through the week. In early centuries this was how Christians greeted one another in stead of with our meaningless “Hi!” Then the Church continues her Advent instruction by asking us “to give proof to all of your courtesy.” If we do manifest this Christian courtesy, the “peace of God, which surpasses all (human) thinking (will) watch over (our) hearts and minds (united) in Christ.” What a beautiful summary of the Christian life: union with Christ and with one another in Him, amid that deep inward peace that He alone ca» bestow. Working in this formula for the next two weeks, we hall enjoy an event, indeed, when Christ comes to us on Christmas. GRADUAL- Another invitation! This is a further reminder that the Saviour came only after centuries of ardent longing for Him. So even now He can enter souls only when they have made room for Him by a great desire. Therefore we implore the Lord, with Isais* the prophet of old. “Exert ... thy sovereign strength and come GOSPEL—Now we stand on the Jordan's bank receiving the testi mony of the King’s last herald, the Baptist, who comes with a twofold message: 1) He is even now “in the midst” and 2) “Saraighten out tha way of the Lord.” Of course, we know He is here now in each member of His Mystical Body. But is He not almost as unknown in our busy, industrialized world as when the Baptist pointed Him out to the crowds with which he mingled so inconspicuously beside the river? Then I also have something to do about His coming I must straighten all the devious ways of little insin cerities, fill up the ruts of my many omissions of duty, and smooth out the surface of the road by a solid and universal charity. All this we do in the Canon of the Mass, where our Sacrifice, "carried by the hands of an angel to the altar on high,” opens up the Wte S w. .1 I 1 way for God’s return Gift, the Sav iour to enter the Bethlehem of souls. For the very Act of Sacrifice is our best preparation in straight ening out the way for the sacrific ial Guest to dwell permanently in our midst. OFFERTORY—As we lay our gift of self upon the altar we thank the Lord for the Redemption this Sacrifice will bring to all off us to day: “Restoring (us) from captiv ity, pardoning (our) guilt.” But the Church shows us how often we need to be reminded of all this by repeating over and over again the truths we believe in but little re alize. SECRET—“May our dedicated of fering, Lord, be sacrificed unceas ingly to thee” by a life conform able to our role as co-victim with Christ in the Sacrifice. COMMUNION—If we were ever inclined to think that it is too hard, this living as a Christian in a pag an world, abstaining from count less forbidden pleasures, and fet tered by the law of “thou shalt not”—if we are the “fainthearted,” Mother Church tells us to “take courage and have no fear. (For the Lord) will come (into the midst of our very soul) and will save us” from the overwhelming odds of temptation. We alone are already beaten but we and God are unde featable. POSTCOMMUNION—Here is real Advent prayer, summing up the effects of our Sacrifice just of fered. “We beg that these di vine aids (may) prepare us for the coming festival.” Then, when the Bridegroom arrives, whether it be on this Christmas, or on the Day of Judgment, we may, like those wise virgins, have the lamps of our preparedness burning brightly for Him. —(Copyright, 1954, Bruce Publishing Co.) -----------------0..........—— Want ada save time and money.
