Facts Give Lie To Rosy View Of Red China LONDON —(NC)— Only 96 foreign Catholic missionaries are alive today in the whole of communist China, according to a report released here. They include four Bishops— two of them in jail, one Prefect Apostolic who is in jail, 62 priests of whom 20 are in jail, three Brothers and 26 nuns. Four years ago when the communists seized power there were nearly 6,000 such missionaries. The communists killed or let die in prison 39 of them. The rest were expelled, most of them after months—some times years—of physical and men tal tortures to make them confess to “crimes” of which they were innocent. These facts given here in a care fully prepared pamphlet drawn up jointly by three national Catholic societies, the Sword of the Spirit, which wages war directly on com munism the Catholic Truth So ciety, and the Catholic Social Guild. It is entitled “Religious Freedom in China.” Its declared intention is to coun teract the growing benignity of the press and the politicians of this country, backed by Big Business, toward the tyranny of Peking. It is an answer to bemused politicians and others who have returned from pleasant official visits to “the new China” in the past few months to repeat the parrotlike phrases of their hosts. Before reciting some of the more blatant examples of terror now operating in communist China, the pamphlet declares: "What is happening in China is not a side issue. The Chinese people constitute one-fifth of the whole human race. They will play an increasingly import ant part which in certain circum stances could be decisive in world affairs. Some say that there Is freedom of religion in communist China today. To them there are two answers: “1. Every school and educational establishment in China is under communist control. As far as we know there is only one exception, the girls’ school run by the Fran ciscan Missionaries of Mary in Pek. ing which is permitted for the con venience of Indian residents. In ev ery school under communist con trol ‘political science’ is a com pulsory subject for all grades. Po litical science is the teaching of1 Marxism-Leninism, that is atheis tic communism. “2. It is impossible for anyone in China to hold a position of import ance unless he is a member of the Communist Party? To become a member of the Communist Party apostasy is essential.” DC. A plenary indulgence remits all temporal punishment due for sin. A partial indulgence remits part of the temporal punishment due for sin.
