Slav Prison TRIESTE INC}— “Standing on the threshold of death, I where men do not speak untruths, I swear that the accusations I made against me during the trial were lies .” I These are the words of a priest who was sentenced last I October to die by hanging after a communist court in Yugo I slavia had found him guilty of “political crimes.” They are quoted from a series I when witnesses "gave deliberately false evidence against me.” Only a little while before, the Franciscan superior had delivered a speech from the dock in which he had denounced as “a very palpa ble invention” the charge that he had "personally taken part in the massacre of the Serbs in the vil lage of Grabovac.” The Croats are virtually all Catholics, while the vast majority of the Serbs belong to the dissident Orthodox Church. Recalling that at that time (1941) he had occupied the post of head of the village administration, and had actually saved the lives of many Serbs, the priest told the court: "I solemnly declare before you, venerable People’s judges, that the whole accusation against me is false. My whole life, which has been devoted to God and the Church, testifies that I am inno cent. During the trial I have re ferred to more than 20 people who should be called as witnesses. Not one of those who have known me for any length of time believes this villainous lie ... I repeat I did not participate in the killing of the Serbs, neither did I instigate anybody to such an action. Some of these Serbs whose lives I have saved in giving them shelter in my house, and who fought later as Chetniks, made written statements thanking me when we parted.” The tone of Father Marijan’s notes indicates that he was in dai ly, if not hourly, anticipation of be ing taken to the place of execu tion. “So far as I myself am concern ed,” he wrote in one note, "I have no anxiety. If I must die, I shall meet my death in the faith of the early Christian martyrs. And, in deed, I am not so lonely as some body might think I am preparing for my end by daily conversation with God.” Again, in a note presumably ad dressed to his mother, Father Mari jan wrote: “The die is cast. I have a few days more in this world to prepare for the bitter journey before me Now, in this solemn hour, when the transitory character of all things earthly is made clear to me, when the past lies before me like an open book, all the events of the days gone by rush in upon me and make it hard for me to take farewell.” In a note addressed to a Father Martin. O.F.M., Father Marijan de clared: “I am sorry that I was not allowed to make my last confession and to receive the consolation of my Faith at the hands of a priest. I am ready, however, to step be fore the tribunal of my Lord and Creator.” Make Your Plans Now There will be a total eclipse the sun June 19th. The best place to view it i* in Southeast Asia.
