BBC Scored for Airing Atheistic Propaganda LONDON, England (NO Catholic commentators publicly attacked the state-controlled British radio monopoly for spreading atheistic propaganda through two sensational lectures which stirred a national controversy. The lectures were delivered by Mrs. Margart Knight, uni versity lecturer and self-styled “scientific humanist,” who achieved overnight fame with her first broadcast on “Morals without religion.” In this and an other talk a week later, she de nied the existence of God, the In carnation, the Resurrection, the Divinity of Christ and other basic Christian truths. At the same time, rhf derided the Bible as a collec tion of myths and legends. The Catholic commentators brushed aside left-wing and liberal istic clamor for freedom of the air in such matters and demanded that the British Broadcasting Cor poration, besides preventing such talks in the future, should try to repair the damage done by arrang ing an adequate Christian reply. Father Joseph Christie, S.J., of ten the unofficial Catholic champion in the national argument, declared from the pulpit of the Jesuit church in Farm street here: "The B.B.C. If the opportunity is not given then a monopoly power has been used to our detriment." The Catholic Herald also attack ed the B.B.C. for allowing the broadcasts. "It is not its business in a popu lar talk to go out of its way to chal lenge the religious views of most listeners,” it said. "The only cir cumstances in which the BBC. might feel itself entitled to do this would be if so solid a case were made to show that religion is ac tually harmful to public and so cial morals that the C. itself— at present run within the general acceptance of the main streams of Christianity had to ask itself whether its underlying religious assumptions were socially harmful. CUYAHOGA FALLS—Reverence for the family, bulwark of Chinese society for 5,000 years, was shat tered by the Communists in two years. So reports Maryknoll Father Lloyd Glass, now stationed in Cuy ahoga Falls, who served 16 years in South China before the Reds rejected him in 1951. He believes the Chinese children will be lost to the Church and to civilization in general because of propaganda, Red military training and separa tion from their families. It was won derful to be able to walk from room to room, and up and down stairways, without running an obstacle course. But my liberty was short-lived. ALMOST NEVER, now, do I go directly from the dining room into the kitchen, or vice verse. Not only does that involve unfastening and fastening Lady’s folding gate, but also stepping over or around Lady. I take the long way through the door which goes from the kitchen into the living room. Stepping around Lady is even more complicated than opening and shutting folding gates. The trouble is that Lady is always overjoyed to see me. She is everjoyed to see almost anybody. She is a gushing, exclamatory, gesticulating female. She doesn’t want you to pass her. She wants you to stop and be made much of. THE SITUATION is even more difficult when Lady is in the base ment. She lies either at the foot of the stairway or two or three steps up. She greets you effusive NEWARK FEED STORE S. Sth FA. 43061 Newark, O. Sirria Intarrtt! Getting past her into the base ment is a feat of acrobatics. Lady is also an annoyance when I am eating. This ritual usually takes place in the kitchen. Opening and setting the dining room table is too much trouble. Now, I find eat ing a nuisance even without Lady. I begrudge the time necessary to push things into my head and chew them But with Lady present, what was merely an inconvenience be comes a major penance. I BEGIN by ordering Lady, with an imperative gesture to go lie down. I do not tell her to lay down as everybody else does. I demand, from any dog occupying our prem ises, a decent respect for good grammar. So I tell ner to lie down, which she does obediently, looking reproachfully from her brown eyes. The moment I am seated she is up again either sitting beside my chair and watching every bite I eat, or foraging on the floor under my feet. Dining becomes a frantic process of stuffing in food between reiter ated cries of “Lady—go lie down!” If I could discover some method of living without eating, I would glad ly adopt it. But I must get back to the sub ject of tail-wagging. As I said, it. fascinates me Ladv’s bushy tail waves incessantly like a plume, indicating her pleasure in human company. Why did God make dogs so their tails wag? Was it simply to provide a signal for lonely folk that they are loved by Him, if by no one else? Or why? -----------------o----------------- Want ads are orofit tested and proved. BUYERS' NEWARK GUIDE CLASSIFIED SECTION 20c per lino Sen* Ads Te I P. O. Bex 686 CotamVes 16.
