ROBERTS' PLUMBING COMPANY PLUMBING & STEAM FITTING 1574 E. Main St FA. 2146 Columbus, Ohio Reds Forbid (xMisecration Of Chapel TRIESTE (NC) Com munist authorities in Yugosla via have refused to permit the consecration of a chapel in Split designed by the famous Croatian Catholic s u 1 ptor Ivan Mestrovic, because it might lead to a religious revi val among the people. The reason for the refusal is given in a confidential let ter sent by the Yugoslav Min istry of Interior to local au thorities in Split, a copy of which has become available here. The letter said that “for the time being the government, after ma ture consideration of the matter, cannot grant permission to the re actionary Roman Catholic Bishop of Split to perform the public and solemn religious ceremony of the consecration of the small church in Split built by the well known sculptor Ivan Mestrovic, since the end of the war a resident abroad who recently became an American citizen.” (Mr. Mestrovic is now teaching at the University of Syra cuse in Syracuse. N.Y. He will join the faculty of the University of Notre Dame next summer.) The letter continued: “You are advised, however, to adopt delaying tactics in re gard to the Bishop of Split. “The consecration of the Mestro vic church would lead to the re vival of superstition called re ligion by our enemies—among the ignorant people. “W’e hope that the Mestrovic church will remain as it is at pres ent: a museum of the religious art of the bourgeois-capitalist epoch which ended in Yugoslavia with the victory of the communist par tisans. As such the Mestrovic church will serve the useful pur pose of attracting foreign tourists, particularly Americans and Ger mans, who are bringing*"us foreign currency. “It is hoped that the sculptor Mestrovic, who is now an old man, will not live for many years.
