fr—THE CATHOLIC TIMES Friday, Feb. 4, 1955 Crusade for Souls Hailed by Convert Priest DALLAS, Tex. (NC) The Crusade for Souls, launch ed throughout the Diocese of Dallas-Fort Worth by Bishop Thomas K. Gorman, has been hailed as “the most significant development in the convert movement in America” by a leader in the convert aposto late. Father John A. O’Brien, author in-residence at the University of Notre Dame, told a rally here that the Crusade for Souls will reclaim hundreds of fallen-away Catholics and double the number of converts in this Texas diocese. “This is the eighth diocese,” Fa ther O’Brien pointed out. “to mo bilize its priests, religious and laity in a concerted effort to bring the saving truths of Christ to their churchless friends and neighbors. It summons the laity to take a house to house census of Catholics and to invite churchless people to Mass and especially to the Relig ious Information Forum to be held in each parish.” In addresses both in Dallas and Fort Worth, Father O’Brien stress- The Mader-Peoples Funeral Homes 42 i Putnam Ave. 810 Forest Ave. Phono 2*4551 Arthur A. This was the question posed by The Catholic Herald, a na tional weekly, in a special ar ticle in which it recalled a re cent prediction by Bishop John C. Heenan of Leeds that in 50 years the Catholic Church will be left alone to fight paganism in this country. The newspaper quoted John Pearmain, an official of the Con verts’ Aid Society who is himself a former Anglican and Methodist clergyman, as stating that the 20, 000 parishes of the Church of Eng land (Anglican) today are served by some 14,000 clergy, while the 2,000 Catholic parishes have near ly 7,000 priests. Some other facts cited by Mr. Pearmain, all pointing to a weak ening of Anglican strength and in fluence, were: ed the key role of the layman in the Crusade for Souls. He urged Catholics to attend inquiry classes with their prospective converts if it all possible. Often these convert minded Catholics become the god parents when the person they have introduced to Catholicism is receiv ed into the Church, he said. ZANESVILLE 'S Funeral Directors Z-6 Beverages W. But today, with the population at 44,000.000, the num ber of Anglican clergy is only 14, 000. There are 12.000 Anglican in cumbents (pastors) and only 2,000 curates (assistants). “One result of this is that in the next 20 years hundreds, and, pos sibly, thousands of non-Catholic churches will be up for sale,” Mr. Pearmain stated. All his facts were based on the 1954 report of the Anglican Council of Training for the Ministry. The Church of England is itself very anxious about the position. It has recently been making moves to attempt to secure greater con trol of its own affairs from the parliament of the day, while retain ing its privileged status as the of ficial church of the nation. At pres ent, as one example of the politic ians’ powers, all its bishops are ap. pointed through the government. -----------------o----------------- Jap Catholic Hi Schools Can Start Junior Colleges TOKYO (NC) Two Catho lic high schools for girls have been authorized by the Japanese Minis try of Education here to establish junior colleges.
