This view was expressed here this week by Mr. Douglas Hyde, former editor of the Com munist Daily Worker in London, England. Mr. Hyde also stated that the free-world-versus-communism strug gle is also mainly a battle for the control of men’s minds and hearts. The colonial areas are consider ed decisive by the Reds in their drive against free men, he added. ♦he Pointing out that most of countries where the Reck strong are mission areas, Hyde said the communists lieve Africa is "wide open” those who will develop leaders among the natives. "We cannot solve the problem of colonial lands by military and economic means alone. There is a Red menace in those lands be cause there are millions of peo ple who have nothing to live or die for." Mr. Hyde spoke in the same vein before a mission-aid society in Pittsburgh. He asserted that the work of the missioner in the mis sionary countries of Africa and Asia will to a large extent deter mine whether the people will en list under the standard of the Cross or the banner of the hammer and sickle. “It is our duty to support these missionaries, therefore, not only for the work they are doing in bringing an enlightened faith to millions without faith, but insofar as they are fighting civilizaton’s greatest battle at the present time, and on their efforts it will be de termined whether the Cross or the hammer will be triumphant. -----------------o----------------- Nixon, on Tour, Advised to Visit M1V1SCU IO V1S1L Priest-Educators HOBOKEN, N. In “An Open Letter to the Vice President” before Mr. Nixon’s de parture, Friars' Fields asked him to visit some of the American Franciscan Conventuals working in Costa Rica. Recommending a visit to St. Francis College, located in a sub urb of the capital, at San Jose, it said: “The Friars who built and run the college have made such pro gress and so many friends in four years that by now their school is far-famed in Central America.” The magazine then declared: “You may well wonder why the friars have undertaken the diffi cult task of building and conduct ing a seminary in Costa Rica. Well, like your own administra tion, they believe that they ought to help others to be independent.” o---------------- Oldest Member of Holy Cross Order Dies at 84 NOTRE DAME, Ind.
