In the fir,ft of two ezclwsiue articles for ihe Catholic press E'ather Bissonnette puts down .some answers to the many questions asked him since his return to the United Sates. He wds ousted from Moscow after spending over two years as Catholic chaplain to the foreign colony there. The recent power shift in the Soviet Union is unlikely to have any bearing on the future of religious freedom there. Communism, at least the Leninist communism prevailing in the Soviet Union, is intrinsically atheistic. No matter who holds the Red helm, be it Malenkov, Bulganin or Khrushchev, he must necessarily be dedicated to extirpating what com munism considers as “religious su perstitions.” I see no possibility at the pres ent time of a rapprochement be tween Christianity and commun ism. There may at some, future time be a rapprochement,' but it will only come after communists no longer look upon marxism as a full-fledged substitute for religion. Any understanding between the Reds and Christianity must await the time when they are content to look upon communism as only an economic and social system and stop pretending that it is a relig ion. I motions. a^nSl around to communism is not by discriminating against them but by patiently educating them so They will “free themselves from relig ious errors.” I have frequently been asked whether the recent accent on anti religious propaganda in the Soviet Union indicates a genuine relig ious revival. I cannot say that I have positive knowledge of such a revival. But it is permissible to draw the following conclusion: If a propaganda campaign is suddenly intensified or changed, a safe assumption is that the former campaign proved a failure. And the Russian officials will admit that it has failed. The fact is that young people were still being married in church, baptized and educated in the faith. They were even becoming adept in answering the ridicule heaped on religion. When one atheistic lecturer ridiculed belief in a God, because, as he put it, the world was functioning so smoothly it did not need a God, he got this reply from his listeners: “That just shows how stupid you are and how smart God is. God is so intelligent that He can make a world which can run by itself.” o u nist officialdom took note of this and told the atheistic agitators: “Ixiok what you have done to these people. After all this ridicule they arc now ridiculing you," This is why Khrushchev stressed that the anti-religious propaganda should be based on science and not ridicule. The largest group of religious believers in the Soviet Union is the Russian Orthodox. There are also about some 30.000.000 Mos lems. They would ha' e something to jump on. Of course, the communists hope for the day when everybody will be so "enlightened” that no one wants to practice any religion. But as long as “religious superstition” persists the Reds will leave just enough freedom so they can point to it in their propaganda and say. “See. we have freedom of rehg ion.” (In his second article Father Bis sonnette will analyze the workings and effectiveness of the Soviet propaganda on the Russians them selves.) -o- Protestant Church Exhibit Features Painting of Pope NEW YORK—(NC)—A painting of His Holiness.
