Awnings Reds Seen Real Threat Inside Latin Ameriea PANAMA CITY (NC) The question of whether Communism is a real menace in Latin America was put to Douglas Hyde at the Third International Catholic Rural Life Congress. Mr. Hyde, former news editor of the communist Daily Worker of London, before his con version in 1948. said that Latin America, together with Asia and Africa, 1k regarded by the commun ists as a '‘colonial’ or "semi-coloni VENTED AU-ALUMNUM AWNINGS GET THE BEST By World's Largest Manufacturer of Famous ALSCO Storm Windows and Doors ____ e 100% LIGHTWEIGHT, STURDY ALUMINUM CONSTRUCTION— PAYMENTS rm june Plus an Aluminum Storm Screen Door Call For Free Estimates or Write: ALSCO C/O Don McGuire 2590 Swansea Columbus 21, Ohio Name al” area which offers them great opportunities for expansion. “They believe.” hr explained, “that if you have had hunger and a growth of anti-imperialism in any such area, these can be used by even a small minority of commun ists as revolutionary forces paving the way to communism. It is im perative, therefore, that such movements (which may be legiti mate in themselves) should be kept out of the hands of the commun ists. The communists are confident that these things exist in Latin America and can he used by them. Sireaxnc ihat ihc poverty of Latin America is one of their greatest allies, Mr. Hyde said the Reds “are determined somehow to get their foot inside the western hemisphere in order to be able to assist them in their fight against the United States, which they re gard as their greatest opponent.” “They will use any tactics which are likely to succeed,” he added. “They will try to build up anti American feeling as a means of creating communist-led anti-im perialist movements. They will try to exploit the land hunger of the campesinos (peasants) unless it is quickly satisfied. They will, in par ticular, try to infiltrate the ranks of frustrated students, intellectuals and impoverished urban workers.” Asked what means he would suggest to fight world common, ism, Mr. Hyde said it would be best defeated "by practical Christianity rather than by just a negative anti-commu n i s m." Elaborating this view he said: “We shall rob the communists of the things that help them most if we work by Christian means to end social injustices in both town and country if we put forward the Church’s belief in the value of pri vate property in assuring man's dignity if in international affairs, the people of the wealthy nations are prepared to accept responsi bility for lifting up the poor ones, drawing in our own belts in order to do so—and not for purely po litical reasons, but for the love of God and our fellow men.” HOttER DIE FORMED FOR EXTRA STRENGTH— •X vB Te withstand wind, rein. snow, sleet and V. Paul J. Glenn, rector of St. Charles Seminary- Speaking on purity in the first of five addresses Jhe will give dur ing May on The* Catholic Hour, Msgr. Glenn declared that the “root of brutality is uncleanness.” He asserted: "A* St. Thoma*'Aquena* note*, carnal tint, more than any oth ert, tend to brutalize a man, and thut make him the easy victim of every temptation to inhuman ity, uncharity, injustice, and all that makes for upheaval and ter ror in human tociety." Nationally known as an educa tor, author and lecturer. Msgr. Glenn warned I had “man must ex pel frofn his life fthe alien gods of self-indulgence and unclean de lights.” He emphasized: “Surely, if ever peace is tn come again upon the earth, men need to clear out from (heir souls and their lives everything that is in decent and unclean.” The Columbus prelate, whose, ad dress was carried by the National Broadcasting Co., and was heard locally on WLW, dwelled al length on current misconceptions of the virtue of purity. He continued: “A modern person, reading the statement of a saint that more than 90 of every 100 souls in hell are there because of impurity is like ly to stand astonished, not as at an exaggeration, but rather in utter wonderment at what the saint can mean. “A day that takes in its stride the existence of divorce and mul tiple marriages, to say nothing of contraception and what is called pre-marital "experience”, is not likely to have any very clear-cut notion of what is meant by purity or by its opposite. “A regrettable Victorian prud ery which made virtue consist al most wholly in externals, and a twisted puritamsm which falsified the whole mcaninc of personal ric cency and dignity, have given place tn a current disregard of the entire matter as one of slight sig nificance. “People today, speaking in broadest terms, have not only largely lost what Arnold Lunn’s father called ‘the sense of sin’ they have also lost the sense of vir tue. The test of conduct, internal and external, has come to be what is convenient what is accepted by a material minded society as suit able what one wishes to do what involves no notable interference with business or pleasure what is emotionally pleasing.” Msgr. Glenn, who defined purity as “the most gracious, and in some sense the most fundamental vir tue.” declared that it is “not mere ly a holding back, a self-restraint, under the stress of unworthy or lawless impulse. "It is a positive virtue," he said, "not merely a kind of ne gation. In the lover of cleanli nei» of soul end of life, he con tinued, wi find a positive end active use of ideals, prayer, the grace of God, to establish and maintain the beauty and the power of an upright and en nobling life." Noting that the month of May is a time of special devotion to the Blessed Mother. Msgr. Glenn said that it is significant that the very first virtue we name in the Litany of Loreto is “Mother most pure.” He stressed: “When we name a virtue in the Mother of God, and call upon her to pray for us, we are manifestly asking her intercession that God will establish in us the virtue wc have named. Thus when we ex claim in reverence and admiration upon considering the immaculate purity of Mary, wc instantly beg her prayers that wc ourselves may be made pure and kept pure.” Msgr. Glenn's sermon series in cludes talks entitled “Virgin Most Prudent.” May 8 “Spiritual Ves sel.” May 15 “Virgin Most Re nowned,” May 22: and "Queen of All Saints," May 29. The programs, sponsored by the National Council of Catholic Men, also feature music by the schola cantorum of St. Charles Seminary, under the direction of Father Thomas Gallen.
