That’s something they’ve been trying to achieve for six years. Premier Ichiro Hatoyama, who seeks “normalized” rela tions with Soviet Russia and closer trade contacts with com munist China, recently received the degree of Master Mason here. Pre minent American and Philippine Masons attended the ceremony. Father Healey to Attend Minor Seminary Meeting Father Edward F. Healey, pre fect of seminarians and professor of English at St. Charles Seminary, will attend the sixth annual Minor Seminary Conference on the Curri culum of the Minor Seminary May 13-15, at the Catholic University of America, Washington, D. C. In addition to a review of last year’s study of seminary Greek courses, the 1955 meeting wiP con centrate on social studies. For years the Masons had tried to get Mr. Hatoyama’s strongly pro American predecessor, Shigeru Yoshida, to join, but without suc cess. Hatoyama took the first step of initiation into Masonry several years ago, when he was still a po litical purgee. (Gen. Douglas Mac Arthur’s headquarters had put him on the purge list early in 1946.) He became Prime Minister last De cember. Thereupon the Lodges pre pared to make him a Master Ma son. Freemasonry was launched in Japan about January, 1949, with the active encouragement of high officers in the U.S. Occupation headquarters. An American Army officer, belonging to a Tokyo head quarters section with a branch in Manila, was the chief organizer of Masonry in Japan. He used his of ficial journeys between Tokyo and Manila for the purpose. Later, he was accused of illegal traffic in military currency, was courtmartialed, convicted, and sent back to the U.S. His campaign to promote Masonry thereby came un der something of a cloud. Freemasonry in the Philippines is notoriously anti-Catholic. It be gan there as an importation from Spain. So far, Japanese Freemasons as a group have taken no apparent an ti-Catholic stand. Rosary Rally Runs Afoul of African Segregation Laws LYDENBURG, Union of South Africa (NC) The South Afri can racial segregation law led to a family rosary rally, featuring Father Patrick Peyton, C.S.C., be ing held in darkness. The town clerk of Nelspruit, a town of the Lydenburg diocese, informed the committee organizing the rally that if both Africans and Europeans attended a scheduled rally in front of the town hall, all the lights would be turned off. He said mixed gatherings were illegal under the apartheid (racial segre gation) law. Determined to have the rally anyway, Bishop John Riegler of Lydenburg changed the location of the rally to the church grounds. Both Africans and Europeans at tended it, but it was held in com plete darkness. CHEVROLET 555 W. Broad St. CA 8-1555 Anti-Reds Seek Foreign Press Support WASHINGTON (NC) U.S. Senator Paul Douglas of Illinois and Rep. Walter H. Judd of Minnesota teamed up at a press lisncheon here to urge support for the recently reorganized Committee of One Million Against the Admission of Communist China to the United Nations. With a “slightly reorganized” steering committee the reactivated organization was set up to carry on the work started last year through a nationwide petition campaign which secured 1.037,000 individual signatures against the admission. Senator Douglas told the news men there was “no ethical case for the admission of Red China to the United Nations." He said that admission of Red China to the UN "would have a disastrous effect on the spread of commun ism in Asia and would pro vide a great propaganda weapon for Red China." The Illinois Senator hastened to add that the organization was ‘‘not a committee of the right wing of the United States.” He pointed out that the American Federation of Labor has taken substantially the same position as that of the Committee of One Million. Representative Judd, one of the initiators of the movement, point ed out that some 250 sponsors of the committee include one-fourth of the membership of the House READ THE TIMES WANT ADS. The H. J. German Reds Aim New Attacks At Clergy, Church BERLIN (NC) The East German communist regime has fir ed a new broadside at religion and at the Catholic and Protestant Churches. The attack was made after the communists failed in their efforts to have all the East German youth initiated in communist rites. Both Catholic and Protestant prelates expressed strong criticism of the Red rites, declaring that they sought to separate youth from Christianity. Only about 20 per cent of the East German youth, it is estimated, took part in the rit es, despite strong government pres sure on both youths and parents. In an article published in the party publication, the Reds charg ed, “The Pope and the other Cath olic prelates, Bishop Dibelius (Lu theran Bishop of Berlin) and the other leading representatives of Lu theran Church vie with each other in justifying the rule of the im perialist bourgeoisie and in defend ing an agressive, inimical policy toward, and hatred for, the work ers and farmers.” of Representatives and about the same percentage of the Senate.
