The awards for youth will be known as the Eagle of the Cross Award. It will be given at the discretion of the diocesan youth director to outstanding youths who have been active members in good standing in any approved Catholic youth organization for a period of at least one full year. The award for adult volunteer workers will be known as the Pro Deo et Juventute Award It will be given to adults who. in the op inion of the diocesan youth direc tor. distinguish themselves in vol untary service to Catholic youth and who are not paid professional or staff members. -------------------o—---------------- Aquinas Awards Scholarships lo Exam Winners One-year scholarships to Aquinas were awarded to Michael Colburn, 266 E. Parish CYO Groups to Launch Communion Crusade Sunday Members of the parish CYO’s af filiated with the CYO Council will initiate a Holy Communion crusade this Sunday which will continue for three weeks. The drive will end Sunday, May 29. when all young people are asked to receive Holy Communion on National Youth Communion Sunday. The plans for the crusade call for the youth of certain parishes to attend Mass and receive Holy Communion every morning for a week in their parish church. They will pray for the increase of relig ious vocations. Announcement of the Crusade was sent to parish CYO moderators and presidents last week so that plans could be made to enlist all the youth of the parish in this crusade. The sched ule for the crusade is as follows: May 8 to 15, Christ the King, Holy Spirit, St. Catharine, St. Thomas, St. Aloysius, St. Mary Magdalene. St. Simon and St. Jude. May 15 to 22, St. John the Evan gelist, Corpus Christi, St. Ladis laus, St. Leo, St. Mary, St. Mich ael, Immaculate Conception, Our Lady of Peace, St. Augustine, St. James the Less. St. Gabriel. Paul Scholl acted as temporary chairman of the group. Youth Urged to Give Vocation A Try DALLAS (NC) If a young man thinks he might have a vo cation to the priesthood, he ought to give it a try. Bishop Thomas K. Gorman of Dallas-Fort Worth de clared. Speaking at a vocation rally here, the Bishop said that the young person entering the semi nary or novitiate might be mis taken about having a vocation. But. he said, if you never try it out, the directors and superiors will never get a chance to encour age you. But if you leave after a couple of years, there is no dis grace, he added. ......- o——---------- College Students Write, Direct Original Plays The English. Speech and Drama departments of the College of St. Mary of the Springs will present a program of original one-act plays in Erskine Theatre Tuesday, May 10 at 8:15 p. m. The public is in vited. Margaret Zang will direct her own prize-winning play, “The Line,” a fantasy in six scenes, dealing with a farm bordering on Iron Curtain territory. The second play, which tied for first place in the college playwrit ing contest, is “The Ghost Walks.” Written by six members of the evening class in creative writing, it will be directed by Eleanor Por chetti with Jeanne Kelly as tech nical director. -------------------O------------- Springs Team Sets Debate With Mt. St. Joseph College Students from St. Mary of the Springs College will debate with a team from Mt. St. Joseph Col lege, Cincinnati, Saturday, May 7. Evelyn Gearhart, Helen Graham, Use Graf and Dorothy Molyet of St. Mary will uphold the proposi tion that the McCarran-Walter Act should be repealed. The St. Mary debating team was formed this year and is coached by Edna Nagy, a sophomore from Barberton, O. The paper is called Duong Song (W’ay of Life). Originally a weekly, it now’ prints about 8,500 copies twice a week. ATLANTIC^ TOWERS ON THE OCEAN STREET Him- I hat Discriminate Against Private Schools Hit bv NCCM BOSTON (NC) Zoning laws which discriminate against private schools were deplored in a resolution adopt ed at the closing of the 35th annual meeting of the Nation al Council of Catholic Men here. The resolution noted that “private schools have a con stitutional right to exist and parents a constitutional right to send their children to such schools.” The resolution said that “by legal interpretation, in some cases, or existing law, private schools, recoghized and chartered by state educational agencies are not entitled to the same rights and privileges as public schools in the selection of building sites.” In another resolution, the NCCM noted that five years have elapsed since the General Assembly of the United Nations voted in favor of the internationalization of Jerusa lem.
