Only Two Percent of Peoples On Formosa are Not Chinese TAIPEI, Formosa In order that we may hold realistic and morally justifiable views on the “Formosa Question,” it may be necessary to clear up misunderstandings caused by the contradictory statements that are sometimes made. These misunderstandings arise most frequently from a false no tion of either the origin of the peo ple of Formosa or the status of Formosa in regard to the Nation alist government. The people of Formosa are Chi nese. Of its present population of some 8,500,000, about 7,000,000 are the descendants of settlers from the mainland provinces of Fukien and Kwantung, who began to come here in the 15th century. The more than 1.000,000 refugees from the Red-held mainland who have come in recent years make up most of the rest of the population. Only two per cent of the people are aborigines, probably of Malayan stock. Taiwan (Formosa) .was a province of China when it was ceded to Japan under the Shimonoseki Treaty at th? end Of the Sino-Jap anese War of 1894-1895. The For mosans were far from reconciled to the cession under duress and it took a strong Japanese military ex pedition to subdue the islanders. Roosevelt Agreed In the Cairo Declaration of De cember 1, 1943, President Roose velt, Prime Minister Churchill and President Chiang Kai-Shek stated that Formosa and the Pescadores would be restored to China. When Chinese troops re-occu pied Formosa in September, 1945, the island became a part of the Republic of China. This status was formalized with the ratification of the Japanese Peace Treaty on April 28. 1952, and the signing in Taipei on the same day of a treaty of peace between the government of Japan and the Republic of China. The United States government recognized the government of the Republic of China, with its pres ent capital of Taipei. Formosa, as the legal government of China. It is this government which has a seat in the United Nations. As such it has a right to all Chinese territory. The American government, com mitted by a mutual defense trea ty. has a perfect right to assist the government of China in retaining any of its territory, whether it be Formosa itself or the offshore is lands of Quemoy and Matsu. There can be no moral justifica tion for calling on the Nationalists to evacuate Quemoy or Matsu. Such an evacuation would in fact be the retreat of lawful forces before the threat of armed aggression. -----------------o----------------- ‘TV Spotlight On TB5 Entries Due May 25 Deadline for entries in the “TV Spotlights TB” project, co sponsored by WBNS-TV, Columbus Gallery of Fine Arts and the Tu berculosis Society, is midnight May 25. Third Hughes Production On Banned List NEW YORK—(NC)—The Nation al Legion of Decency has announc ed it has evaluated the new How ard Hughes-RKO motion picture “Son of Sinbad” in its “C,” or con demned, classification. In the objection posted against the movie the Legion said it “is a challenge to decent standards of theatrical entertainment” and also warned that as “an incitement to juvenile delinquency, it is especial ly dangerous to the moral welfare of youth.” The Legion said the film con tains grossly salacious dances and indecent costuming throughout. It said that the movie seriously of fends Christian and traditional standards of decency. It marked the third time in the last 13 years that a Howard Hughes movie production has been evaluat ed in the condemmned class by the Legion. I The first occasion was in 1942 when as an independent producer, Mr. Hughes made “The Outlaw.” Six years later it was revised by Mr. Hughes and gained from the Legion a Class “B” morally ob jectionable in part for all—evalua tion. In 1953, Mr. Hughes, then with RKO, produced “The French Line.” The picture failed to obtain the seal of approval of the motion pic ture industry, but was released by Mr. Hughes without the seal. The Legion evaluated the picture in Class “C” and objected to “gross ly obscene, suggestive and indec ent action, .costuming and dial ogue.” ------------o--------------- New Residence Hall Head Named for Rome College MILWAUKEE.
