LOUIS (NC) A Catholic hospital is more than just a social agency. Archbishop Karl J. Alter of Cincinnati reminded some 6,000 delegates to the Catholic Hospital As sociation Convention here. It is, instead, “a living expression of the spirit, the teach ing. and the example of Christ,” he said. Since is primarily a relig ious institution, "the technical, professional, and administrative aspects of the hospital must nev er be permitted to take prece dence over the spiritual and re ligious," the Prelate declared. part hos pro- to- And since it is an integral of the Church, “the Catholic pital must in its development gram be subordinate in any cese to the total organization set up for the welfare of souls,” he aaid. Archbishop Alter, who is chair man of the administrative board of the National Catholic Welfare Con ference (NCWC), gave the sermon •t the Pontifical High Mass in St. HEADQUARTERS For Parochial School Team Equipment Wilson and Spalding Athletic Goods Beck & Albanese Sportsmans Service 223 E. Goodale Columbus, O GAM Louis Cathedral opening the 40th annual convention of the Hospital Association. Archbishop Alter said that “any failure to make use of the very best scientific knowledge available, and any specious attempt to justify neglect ot professional, skill and technique would be unworthy of religion and a contradiction of the virtues of justice, charity and pru dence which are inspired by relig ion.” While any hospital provides so cial benefits to its community, he said, a Catholic hospital "must be not only an institution of social service, but an institution of Chris tian charity.” ‘‘Charity is a virtue, social serv ice is a technique or a method, he stated. "Charity is intimately associated with religion: social work is an adaptation of scientific knowl edge.” “Charity implies an attitude of benevolence toward God and our neighbor social work implies an attitude of research and adminis trative efficiency.” Charity is a thing of the spirit social work is a thing of the mind.” Explaining that the true mean ing of charity is love, the Arch bishop said: "It is the spirit and the motive which count and unless these reflect the mind and heart of Christ no Catholic hospital would be worthy of its name." The spirit of Christ in identi fying Himself with the poor and afflicted must pervade the Catholic hospital and distinguish it. he said. Referring to the theme of the convention. “The Road Ahead.” he stated that it was well to remem ber that in these days of accredit ing and standardizing agencies, the Church is “the final authority.” That Good Gambrinu* Beer "Th* Boor That's Starch Free As Boer Can Be.** August Wagner Breweries, Inc. ,1-4411 Columbus, Ohio CA 1-4411 KAUFMAN PONTIAC Columbus' Largest Pontiac Dealer -Buy With Confidence- This Weeks SPECIAL: 1948 Ford, Super- fOOC Deluxe, 4-door, R.&H., Black Finish ........ 4IZ7D Three (large Shopping Centers 961 N.
