God Channels His Gifts, Graces Through Mary The theological meaning of (he title “Spiritual Vessel” as applied to the Blessed Mother was explained by Msgr. Paul J. Glenn Sunday in a radio address carried by the National Broadcasting Co. In the third of a series oflfive sermons on The Catholic Hour, the rector of St. Charles Seminary described Mary as the vessel through which Christ has come to us, and the vessel through which Our Ixud channels His gifts and graces. When we call the Blessed Moth er a Spiritual Vessel," Msgr. Glenn declared, “we mean that she has been laden by her Divine Son with the abundance, the fullness, of spir itual treasures. “She is called by God’s angel a person “full of grace." And grace is the gift of God which makes the soul holy, and imparts to it the beauty that makes it pleasing to God. Mary, endowed with the full ness of grace, has holiness in mea sure far beyond what is possible to other creatures, human and an gelic by that grace, she shines with spiritual heauty before God. pleasing Him more perfectly than any of His other creatures, more perfectly than all other creatures taken together.” Noting that a vessel is not only a container but also a means of conveying its contents to other ings for their use, Msgr. Glenn serted that the Blessed Mother a unique Vessel through which good things are conveyed to the human family of Gods creating.” He continued. “Through Mary, as through the vessel—the conveyor, the channel of His coining—God camp into this world and walked among us as a t'ue member of the human race, a true child of Adam.” Such a Vessel was needed, the Columbus prelate explained, be cause the “human race had sinned in the sin of the first father of all men, and God. His eternal de crees. willed that this sin should be atoned for.” He asserted: "The God-Man, dying in Hi* human nature upon the Cro**, renders to the Creator an infi nite Atonement. By this Atone ment, the human race ha* restor ed to it the opportunity lost in Adam's sin the opportunity of actually working out salvation, using the grace of God freely be stowed to merit, through Christ, a further grace. “And thus, despite the weakness that is left in us as a heritage of original sin despite our conse quent proneness to actual sin. we can stand erect as the images of God, unburdened by the crushing weight of demands of justice we should be hopeless to satisfy, and. by the merits of the Divine Atoner. up can walk manfully forward tn ward heaven, as God intended we should do when He decreed, from eternity, to create us. ‘Certainly, to paraphrase the words of Scripture, God has giv en us all good things in giving us Christ our Savior. And He has giv en us Christ through the instru mentality of Mary the Mother of Christ. In explaining further Mary’s role in the Divine Plan. Msgr. Glenn quoted a figure of speech used by holy writers in the early days of the Church. He said: They compare the Blessed Moth er to the neck of a bottle from which is poured an elixir essential tn the life of every soul. Not one drop of the precious fluid is avail able to man’s requirement it flows through the neck bottle that contains it. "And bringing home the phor, the ancient writer* explain that no gift or grace of God, no meriting of Christ, can come to man unless it passes through walk •nd I -ormer Rome 'Shim Irra* Parish Gets Ohio Priest WASH1NGTON.D.
