Murray, commis sioner of the Atomic Energy Commission, said here he looks to womanhood to turn the world toward that prayer which is necessary “if man is to avoid world suicide.” “I am convinced that the strength of this as of all nation* lives in its womanhood.” he told the American Irish Historical Society, which pre sented him with its 1955 Gold Med al. The award is given each year to an outstanding American of Irish ancestry. “Prayer is the one and only force by which man will ever receive the inspiration, the courage and the strength to enable him to direct nuclear forces toward a better and mor? abundant life,” he said. Commisrioner Murray, who I* a Knioht of St. Gregory and a Knight of Malta, continued: "I look to womanhood everywhere for the inspiration and example to turn us toward God and pray er. For wherever men are strong in their, faith, is not that faith nurtured from the cradle by their mothers and strengthene by the example of their wives?" Mr. Murray, who has been on the inside of atomic and hydrogen pow er developments for the last five years, said it is not strange that man has run into trouble in decid ing how to deal with nuclear power. “Nothing in the history of the human race has prepared us to cope with this awesome situation,” he said. The world has not only had no time to adjust, but hardly time enough to comprehend, he added. “Yet time is running out,” he declared “Man must quickly recog nize his atomic dilemma and make the superhuman effort to resolve it.” Of Interest To Women A May crowning will highlight the May 24 meeting of the St. Christopher parish Council of Catholic Women. Graduations in' in its essential constitution, the di vinely established custodian of the Divine Revelation which indicates our relation with God and our des tiny for eternal union with Him in the happiness of Heaven.” The three main topics of the Faith, the Archbishop said, are knowledge of God, knowledge of self and knowledge of Christ. Mere materialistic research and knowledge, the prelate de clared, are barren, foolish and insipid. He added: “To know the existence of God we need only to look honestly and hum bly at the world about us. To understand the infinite richness of God's Being, we need only to read with prayerful attention the message of God's Revelation in which the length and breadth of His mercy and goodness are laid open to contemplation." Meditating on the knowledge of self, the Archbishop said that many of the “new” scientific methods of psychiatry have been understood in a religious sense for centuries by the masters of the spiritual life. Knowledge of self, the Arch bishop said, should go beyond knowledge of sin and should in vestigate the stimulating, positive aspects of human nature, “one of the most noble products of divine omnipotence.” Knowledge of Christ is necessary because He is the Mediator be tween God and man, the prelate said, “Without Christ we would know God only from afar and our steps toward Him would be few and fal tering,” Archbishop Cushing said. “His earthly life, lived in circum stances which we can easily com pare with our own,- affords power ful example of the virtues which He bids us to practice. His sacri fice of Himself on the Cross has made available to us the divine grace which flows into our souls through the seven Sacraments and through our prayers and good works.” Dr. B. A. Even the communists and socialists rose to their feet, applauding after Mr. Gronchi had cited the “most authoritive voice in the world to who*? high wisdom those, too, may turn, with objective deference who do not have the gift of a religious faith,” Mr. Gronchi spoke about the function of a state based on law as the impartial guardian of the rights of all, of freedom and of the citizens’ equality before the law. He then referred immediately to the urgent political and social needs toward which a democracy must be directed if it wants to survive. It was in this connection that Mr. Gronchi referred to the Pope's May Day warning that no law and no institutional reform can bring any good "if the ordi nary men lives in fear of coming under an arbitrary rule, end does not succeed in freeing him self from the feeling that he is subject to the good and bad will of those who apply the laws, or of those who, as public officials, direct the institutions aid or ganizations if he perceives that, in daily life, all depends on the connections which he unlike others—perhaps, does not have if he suspects that behind the external show of what is called state, there is hidden the manip ulations of powerfully organized groups." & Give your graduate the most trusted name in watches $3995 FOR AS LITHE AS A.
