In the Church there are many
honors, but the real ones are
not attained by favor. Medals can
be pinned on the breast of him
who never fought no luster of
character is added to him who
wears a brighter ribbon. With
Our Lord, true honor resides in
those who are “crucified with
Him that they may reign with
Him.”

Formosan issue is not simply
a matter of keeping or giving
up some islands, it is a ques
tion of American prestige,
Bishop Raymond A. Lane, sup
erior general of the Maryknoll
Fathers, said here.
Bishop Lane, a veterrr of many
years’ missionary service in China,
said the Formosan issue, centered
around the islands of Quemoy and
Matsu, is a question of what effect
this nation's move will have on
world opinion.
“We have lost all we can afford
to lose,” he added. “E'ery step
backward by us is a blow to the
freedom-loving people behind the
Iron Curtain.”
"Most of our trouble*," h* con
tinued, "and those of other peo
ple* are caused by the fact that
men in high places who make de
cisions do not hav* any belief
in God and do not allow moral
factor* and religion to enter into
their calculation*."
The Bishop, who became superior
general to the Maryknollers in
1946. has seen the number of
priests from his. society in China
dwindle under communist pressure
until only one missionary remains
on the mainland, and he is im
prisoned.

gates at the recent Bandung con
ference in Indonesia. He strew
ed that 28 out of the 29 nations
at the meeting professed their
belief in God, and thus "defied
Chou-en-lai, Red China's dicta
tor." He compared this with the
"timidity" of some of this na
tion's public m*n who used "wea
sel words" in dealing with the
Reds.
The Bishop said the tem “Iron
Curtain” does not apply only to
geographical areas. He said it was
also a line of division between
ideas on communism.
He added that this line cuts clear
across the United States. On one
side, he explained, are the disbe
lievers and appeasers of commun
ism and on the other are the be
lievers.
