McGrath Society of St. Columban (Correspondent, N. C. W. C. NEWS SERVICE) TAIPEI, Formosa A group of veteran missionaries on Formosa's east coast are set to accomplish the seemingly im possible to Christianize an entire district in a given num ber of years if the present rate of conversions continues. When the Apostolic Prefecture of Hua Lien was established in August, 1952, there were some 400 Catholics. Now there are 4,000 baptized Catholics and 17,000 catechumens, or people under instruction. the prefecture is Bishop Andre Jean Verineux of Yingkow, Paris Foreign Missionary ousted from his See by the Reds. Assisting him are ten priests of the Paris Foreign Mission Society, five Swiss priests of the Bethlehem Mission Society, four refugee Chinese diocesan priests and two Swiss Canons of St. Bernard. All are seasoned mis sionaries. forced to leave the China mainland by the communists. Helping the priests to cope with the immense task of instructing the converts are 11 Chinese Sisters, refugees from North China, and 92 catechists or teachers. Besides the 35 mission stations with church or chapel, Bishop Verineux has set up 134 catechumenates, or places of instruction. The total population of Hua Lien and Taitung counties is slightly over 300.000. If even half of the 17,000 under instruction are bap tised this year (although there is no reason why the majority should not be) that would mean tripling the number of Catholics in one year —and with yearly tripling of num bers the entire population should be Catholic in five years. However there is always the problem of personnel to instruct large numbers. But allowing an in crease of some 10,000 each year, the same result is obtained in 30 years. The sermon was preach ed by Father James J. Me Larney, O.P., S.T.D., Prior and pas tor of St. Joseph’s Church. Sixty fruitful years ago, Father Murray made his profession in the Dominican Priory, Poitiers, La Vienne, France, May 26, 1895. Ever since that day, Fr. Murray has been faithfully working both here, on the home missions, and on the for eign missions in Trinidad. His desire for the foreign mis sions encouraged Father Murray to depart from his native Ireland, his parents, and all that was close to him to join the Dominican Order in France. After completing a year of spiritual retreat at Poitiers, France, Father Murray was sent to America to complete his studies for the priesthood. Finishing his studies as a Dominican, he was or dained to the priesthood by Most Rev. John Ambrose Watterson, Bishop of Columbus, March 7, 1899. Immediately, Father Murray was sent to Trinidad as a missioner. There for five years Father labored zealously in various capacities— as Chaplain to His Grace, Patrick Vincent Flood, O.P.. Archbishop of Trinidad, as administrator, and as parish priest. In 1905, his health broken, Murray was recall ed to the United States. From 1933 to the present Father Murray has been living at St. Joseph’s Pri ory celebrating Holy Mass every day, hearing confessions, counsel ing and inspiring. ------------0--....... Educator Asks Pertinent Question About Education BRADFORD, Pa.—(NC)—“Isn't it curious that in a ration dedicated to the proposition that God exists and has created men with inalien able rights, a school system which teaches these foundations for citi zenship should be suspect by many in high position? The question was asked this week by Dr. Marius Risley, Buffalo edu cator and representative of the Great Books Foundation “The myth dies hard,” Dr. Ris ley said, “that private and religious schools are somehow less Ameri can, less democratic than tax-sup ported schools. Yet every single signer of the Declaration was edu cated in private and religious schools. How democratic can you get? "I have received instruction and have taught in both religious and tax supported schools. Both are equally American and any other concept of schools in this country cannot be called ‘freedom of edu cation’,” the speaker emphasized. For Advertising Rates Writ*: AO DEPT. CATHOLIC TIMES P.
