GAY ST Injustices to Church In Austria under Nazis Defined by White Paper VIENNA (NC) The injustices suffered by the Church in Austria under the nazis have been thrown into sharp focus by a White Paper issued here by the Bishops. At the same time, the document exposes the false argu ments put forth mainly by the socialists to continue these injustices. The Bishops pointed out that ev er since the end of the war they had repeatedly demanded restora tion of the rights of the Church violated under the nazi occupation, only to be met with the excuse that the time was not yet ripe for dealing with such questions. They said that with the signing of the long delayed treaty with Austria, this excuse can no longer be regarded as valid, and the time has egme to make an urgent de mand for a redress of the wrongs suffered by the Church. The demand* mad* by the Bishops included the abolition of th* nazi-enected marriage law which makes it compulsory to go through a civil marriage before receiving the Church Sacrament, the restoration of state support denied Catholic schools under the nazis, and th* return of re ligion to the curriculum of state schools from which it ousted by the Nazis. the was that con- The Bishops also insisted the validity of the Austrian cordat with the Holy See, which the nazis ignored, should again be recognized. The White Paper recalled that prior to 1938, the cost of main taining Austria’s Catholic schools (elementary, secondary, vocational, etc.) was met by the state. With the advent of the nazi regime, all Cath olic schools were closed. After 1945. Furthermore, since 1945, the Catholic schools have not received a cent of public funds for their maintenance. The Bishops called for the restor ation of the original legal status of Catholic schools. In regard to church property, the White Paper said that where as iniquitous measures taken against the Church by the nazis have long since been done away with, the Austrian state has not yet made any gesture indicating the intention of restoring to its right ful owner the properties, including farmlands and forests, even now under public administration.
