Osserva-\ torr della Domenica, Vatican City weekly, noted in its comments on the Sicilian elections. In the elections the communists and their allies were held to very small gains, while the Christian Democrats substantially increased their vote. The Reds polled 30.5 per cent of the popular vote, com pared with 30.2 per cent in 1951. The Christian Democrats won 38.6 per cept of the vote, compared with 31.2 per cent four years ago. "One might have wished for a notable decrease in communist strength, but it is a highly im portant fact that the extrema left did not advance," said Federico Alessandrini of the newspaper's staff. "Everyone knows,’’ he added, “that in Italy’s south the commun ists had the chance 1o expand which they have lost elsewhere.” He said it was due to the effective work of the Christian Democrats that such an expansion did not take place.
