DON'T DELAY CHECK NOW 60th Wedding Anniversary CONCORD, N.H. (NC) The New Hampshire Supreme Court here has been asked to rule on the constitutionality of a bill now be fore the Legislature which would authorize any private school or col lege, including Catholic institu tions, to borrow money for con struction projects on the State’s credit, thus gaining lower interest rates. The opinion was sought by the Senate judiciary committee after John N. Nassikas, legislative coun sel for Gov. Lane Dwinell, stated that both he and the Chief Execu tive had “reservations” as to the legality of the proposed legislation due to the involvement of church operated schools. He added that the Governor was hopeful that the measure was constitutional since he favored the bill as now drafted. -----------------o----------------- German Youth Pay Tribute to Mary ROME (NC) One‘of the most colorful events here on the new Feast of the Queenship of Mary was a special act of homage paid to the Blessed Mother by rep resentatives of German Catholic Youth. It took place in the Basilica of St. Mary Major, the great Marian shrine, yhen the German group, consisting of separate sections of young men and young women, lighted a votive candle before the celebrated “Salus Populi Romani,” the ancient image of the Virgin en shrined in the basilica. The candle was lit with a miner’s lamp which the pilgrim.-, had kept burning throughout their trip from Germany to Italy. Rates without meals From $2.50 per person double occ. One Priest for Every 1,270 Catholics, Survey Reports FREIBURG, Germany (NC) There are about 360, 000 priests in the entire world, or one priest for every 1,270 Catholics, according to a survey by the Herder Korrespon denz, Catholic documentary magazine published here. This would place the world’s Catholic population at ap proximately 450,000.000. The ratio of priests to Catholics, the survey revealed, is highest in countries where there is only a very small Catholic population, notably the Scandinavian nations, Japan and Israel. The lowest ratio is in traditionally Catholic Latin America. The extremes, according to the survey, are Iceland where there it a priest for each 65 of that country's 500-odd Catholics, and Guatemala, where there Is only one priest for each 18,400 of the faithful. The ratio of priests to faithful in the United States is one to 690. In Canada it is one to 560. Chile has the highest ratio of priests to Catholics in Latin Amer- Bill Would Allow Schools to Borrow From State Funds gl a Ar w ica—one to 3,120. But at the same time it has a lower ratio than any nation outside of Latin America. A survey also noted that there are about 60,000 students in ma jor diocesan seminaries through out the world, or one seminarien for every 7,620 Catholics. It was pointed out that the per centage of Catholics in Germany has risen since the end of the war from about one-third to 45.2 per cent. East and west Germany to gether have a Catholic population of 25,900,000. But postwar trans fers of population have made some an as once mainly Catholic predominantly Protestant, for ex ample, certain regions in Bavaria. Ratios of priests to Catholics for countries under communist domin ation were not included in the Herder survey because of insuf ficient data. Priests behind the Iron Curtain, however, were count ed in the overall total of 360,000 priests. BRYANT COMMAND-AIRE TWINS Heating And Cooling Favret Furnace Co. CA. 4-5211 55 E. God calls Himself a “hidden God”. Our Lord said: “The Kingdom of God cometh not by observation.” That s, it is not like a clap of thunder, or a boul der in the roadway it is some thing unseen by the eyes of men —perceived only by Faith in the Crucified and Risen Christ. For example what does it mean to us that out of 8,500 mis sionaries who were in China four years ago when we became Na tional Director of the Society for the Propagation of the Faith, there are fewer than 60 today, and most of these are in Com munist jails. Do we feel their pain, their tortures? They are our own—they are as closely re lated to us in Christ as our arm is related to our shoulder.
