Solon Moves to Halt Religious Ban at Maine Maritime School WASHINGTON (NC) Rep. Francis E. Dorn of New York, told the House of Representatives that he was “shocked and amazed” at a statement attributed to Rear Adm. W. W. Warlick, U.S.N. (Ret.), superintendent of the Maine Maritime Academy, citing his reason for barring clergymen from the academy. Mr. Dorn announced that he would introduce legislation aimed at preventing any institution, sup ported in whole or part by govern ment funds, from establishing a policy which bars religion and re ligious functions from its buildings. Negro Awarded Scholastic Honor At Georgetown The Admirals statement was brought to public attention by Co adjutor Bishop Daniel J. Feeney of Portland, Me., in his weekly col umn in The Church World, dioce san weekly. News services carried excerpts from the Bishop’s column. Dr. the WASHINGTON (NC) Charles E. Williams became second student in the past decade to earn the degree of Doctor of Juridical Science at Georgetown University, here. He is the first Negro to earn the degree at George town. Dr. Dorn said the Admiral was reported to have said that no clergyman had been admitted to the academy campus buildings in 15 years and was quoted as say ing: "If we did, we would be overrun. This is not a religious place.” Mr. Dorn said that Admiral War lick was quoted as saying of his students, “If their religion conflicts with their duty here, they should resign.” The legislator added: “Re ligion has not conflicted with the duty of any man at Annapolis, West Point or Kings Point Mari time Academy. Nor does religion conflict with the duty of men in the Army, Navy or Merchant Ma rine. If Maine and Admiral War lick see fit to run a godless in stitution for the training of mer chant seamen, the United States must have no part of it Tour Ch^vrol^t Dealer 555 W.
