(NO) In July, 1952. a series of earth quakes prostrated the little town of Tehachapi, Calif., killing a dozen persons, in juring'scores of others and inflicting mil lions of dollars in property damage. Minutes after the first shock, two priests from St. Malachy’s Church rushed to the scene of disaster in the center of the town and began giving the last rites to the stricken. When reporters arrived and started asking questions, they turned up an odd item for their readers The administrator of this little parish in the mountains of California, Father Joseph A. Far rington was officially a member of the clergy of the far-off Arch diocese of Boston. It takes something like an earth quake to bring them out, they fit so well into the local scenery, but the fact is that 18 Boston priests, like Father Farrington, are pres ently serving outside of their arch diocese. They can be found from Norrkoping in Sweden to Drish nager in India, and scattered through ten of the United States. They are not. strictly speaking, missionaries. They are egular members of the Boston archdioces an clergy, loaned to Bishops who ask for them under Archbishop Richard J. Boston priests may vol unteer to serve for several years outside of Boston, and if they later wish to remain permanently in their temporary posts they can be "incardinated" (formally adopted) as members of their chosen diocese. So far, 13 priests have been thus transferred. Eigh teen others, while serving outside of Boston, are still formally part of the Boston clergy. The work of these men in their outside appointments depends on their various qualifications and is left to the discretion of the local Bishop. Most of them have gone in to regular parish work, but others have taken posts as chancery offi cials, seminary instructors, hospital chaplains, or school directors. If the “Lend-Lease” program is considered as covering all Boston diocesan priests serving outside of the Archdiocese, it includes 55 mil itary chaplains now in service, as well as several priests who are do ing non-diocesan work. In diocesan work, besides the two priests outside the country in Sweden and India, a total of nearly 50 Boston priests have served or are serving in dioceses from Flor ida to Washington, and from Cali fornia to Maine. -------------------o------------------- PARIS—(NC))—Catholic schools in the Paris Archdiocese save the French gosernment 4.800.000,000 francs (about $13,333,333) year, according to a statement made in The Religious Week.
