Tickets for the annuel Catho
lic Campers' Night game at Jet
stadium have been on sale for
the past three weeks by the
Holy Name society at every par
ish in the city.
This is the only time during
the year when the public is ask
ed to help out the two diocesan
youth camps, St. Rita for girls
and St. Joseph for boys. The pro
ceeds derived from the game
sale of tickets go to buy much
needed equipment for the camps
—thus making them even more
enjoyable for the summer camp
ers.
This year, besides aiding the
camps, the public will really see
a ball team! The Jets are mak
ing a determined bid for a top
spot in the first division in the
International League. Their ros
ter is dotted with stars—some
from the major leagues—some
who will be in the majors in the
near future.
And if that isn't enough in
centive the Jets will be playing
the Rochester Red Wings, the
St. Louis Cardinal farm, with
many former Columbus Red
Birds on the roster.

The hard hitting center fielder, from Newark, New Jersey, is batting
at a 301 clip. He has accounted for 11 doubles, three triples, three
home runs, and has driven in 26 runs to date.

"Red" Barrett, Columbus Jets
coach, has a long baseball career
in back of him. His top pitching
years were with the Boston
Braves in the National League.
When he retired he Opened a
restaurant in Leesburg, Fla., and
was there when the Jets arrived
for spring training. General Man
ager Harold Cooper liked his
work with the Jet rookies and
signed him on as a coach. "Red"
and family live in Grandview.

Norman Esterbrook, a fifteen
year old tenth grade student at
Columbus Aquinas high school,
won the championship of the Co
lumbus Soap Box derby last Sun
day afternoon on Grandview Ave.
hill and advanced to the national
finals at Akron on August 14.
Esterbrook, the son of Mr. and
Mrs. Carl Esterbrook of 1999 W.
Broad St., took the class A champ
ionship (composed of boys 12 to 15
years old) and then in the final
showdown he nosed out class
champ Gary Wells for the big ti
tle.
Norman accomplished his feat
the hard way, having to repair his
racer after his third win of the
