Shell of Chicago, who has spent a lifetime working with youth, told the Senate Subcom mittee on Juvenile Delinguency “the teen-age kids of this country, for the first time in years, have a sense of belonging.” This has come about, he said, because “at last it has penetrated into the complacency of the Amer ican people and their smugness that there is a tremendous job to be done, a job of love, a job of care and attention to the prob lems and aspirations, too, of these teen-agers.” At examples of conditions that "have developed in tho minds of great numbers of teen agers a sense of not belonging, of having no part in the com munity, of finding no security or love," he cited: Inadequate housing, second-rate education, llvl.ig in scenes of violence and low morel atmosphere, and no opportunities of utilizing energy in playtime activities. He Im plied that alleviation of these conditions has helped to give youth a sense of belonging. Speaking of pornographic litera ture, the Bishop said that every agency of government—and the federal district attorneys of the United States, in particular should be alerted so that the problem of pornography would re ceive proper attention. This must be done, he said, “so that the childhood of boys and girls would not be destroyed by that type of literature, which is more destruc tive than anything we could ever imagine or see.” ------------o-.................. ESTABLISHED IN 1890 ‘Co-Existence’ Plea Is Not All-Inclusive VIENNA (NC) What ever political objectives the communists hope to achieve through their demand for “peaceful co-existence” be tween East and West, they cer tainly have no intention of ap plying the principle to relig ious believers. On the contrary, the Red war against religion is to be intensi fied. This was made clear in an article published in the Soviet provincial newspaper, Tadjikstan Communist. The paper charged that “a com mon defect in many Russian schools is the almost complete absence of lectures on scientific atheistic topics, especially for the parents of students.” It said that “this is a fault no longer to be tolerated, since certain parents and children are still in the grip of religious revivals.” "The Central Committee of the Communist Party," the news paper continued, "has issued in structions making it clear that the current struggle against re ligious prejudices must be re garded as the ideological struggle of a. scientific world outlook against tho forces of anti-scientific religion. “It is therefore the duty of the Ministry of Education and al! teachers and school directors to ensure that natural scientific knowledge is properly dissemin ated, not only among school chil dren but also among their par ents. “There are a number of schools where the teachers regularly carry out exercises aimed at the survivals of the past and illus trated with references, for ex ample, to the clergy abroad who helped the Anglo-American im perialists unleash an atomic war. Thus the children ar® shown con vincingly that religion is the enemy of science and progress. “In many schools, however, par ticularly in rural areas, the im portance of natural scientific atheistic propaganda is still under rated. Under such circumstances, it is naturally difficult to develop a sound materialistic world out look in children.” Of Interest to Catholic* RADIO PROGRAMS Sunday, July 31 WPKO, Waverly, 8:45 a. m.— Sacred Heart Program. Parents Told Of Their Duty, Responsibility WASHINGTON (NC) A speaker on the National Council of Catholic Men’s Christian in Action radio pro gram told parents to remem ber that the right and duty of educating their offspring be longs to them, “not to the theorists.” Father L. C. McHugh, S.J., a Georgetown University professor, said: “Don’t be embarrassed if your home is not run on strictly demo cratic lines. Education is a process that is meant to take place under authority. You are on solid ground when you firmly insist on obedi ence, discipline and order in your home.” The Jesuit priest reminded his audience that the family is by na ture not a “permissive” society, nor even a democratic one. "It is an authoritative society, and tha authority rests with those who have the terrible re sponsibility of seeing that this society achieves the goal for which It exists," he said. "That means that parents not only have the right to educate their chil dren but also all tho authority they need to perform the task.” There was a time, said Father McHugh, when a “conference at the summit” in American family life meant ma and dad “laying down the law.” He adds “Today, all too often, a ‘conference at the summit’ means that the neighborhood teen agers have held a pow-wow in the drugstore and decided just how much leeway the poor parents are to be allowed in managing family affairs.” Belgian Senate Approves Anti Catholic Bill BRUSSELS (NC) The Belgian Senate has approved and sent to King Baudouin the bill cutting state aid to Catho lic schools by over $5,000,000.
