The football season officially
gets under way this week-end with
10 of the diocese’s 11 teams in ac
tion. Two teams, Columbus St.
Charles and New Lexington St. AL
oysius, jumped the gun and play
ed Thursday. The Carolians met
Bexley and Bob Fowle’s St. Al’s
team played Jacksontown.
Only Newark St. Francis does not
start this week. The Green Waves
open their season next Friday at
Frazeysburg.
Friday night’s action will see
five games played while three more
tilts are set for Saturday night.
Marion St. Mary journeys to Ken
ton where Ray Rohbin’s crew will
attempt to keep their unbreaten
string intact. Columbus Rosary, los
ers of only one game last year,
will host Hebron at Jones Field,
while Columbus St. Mary meets
Lancaster BIS. Zanesville Rose
crans travels to West Lafayette and
Columbus Aquinas takes the trip
to Cambridge.
Saturday night Wheelersburg
visits Portsmouth Notre Dame,
Dover St. Joseph goes to Goshen
Union and Roscoe visits Dennison
St.Mary.
In previews last Friday Aquinas
stamped itself as a team with
strong possibilities as the Terriers
first tied Columbus Linden 0-0 and
then came back to roll up 14 points
against Delaware.
St. Charles played probably their
toughest opponent of the season
in their preview at Columbus South
whe.i the Carolians held Columbus
East to one touchdown in a 7-0
loss and then came back to down
Tom Bramlish, the ex-Zanesville
Rosecrans all around athlete, has

These Backs Give St. Charles Strong Offense
HARD HITTERS—The above quintet of Columbus St. Charles backs promises to giv» Coach Jack
Ryan probably his best offensive backfield in the past three seasons. All of them are fast and can
go all the way. Left to right are Chuck Le Bel, Lou Martin, John Dorrlan, Bill Burke and John
Huffman. Dorrian splits the quarterback duties with Ernie De Matteis.

SouLh 14-0 with a good offensive
display.
Against South St. Charles drove
70 yards after receiving the Kick
off and scored when halfback
Chuck Le Bel scored from five
yards out. Later in the same period
fullback Lou Martin gained 55
yards in three plays to set up the
second TD when quarterback John
Dorrian sneaked over from the
two. Center Larry Sopko kicked
both extra points.
At Marini-Franklin St. Mary and
Reynoldsburg played to a 6-6 tie
in a game in which all the scoring
took place in the final three min
utes.
The Rams started the scoring
off at the three minute mark when
quarterback Al Buccilla hit end
Bill Stewart with a pass that was
good for 55 years and a touch
down.
Reynoldsburg came right back
when sub fullback Andy Willard
returned the kickoff 35 yards and
four plays later took a pass from
Bill Mills and scampered 33 yards
to knot the score. That’s all the
scoring there was.
Zanesville Rosecrans fought back
to tie Crooksville 6-6 in the pre
view at Zanesville only to have the
Perry County chib come back with
another score with less than a min
ute remaining to defeat the Bish
ops. 12-6.
The Ceramics tallied first when
quarterback Rod Hughes hit half
back Larry Cook with a pass that
carried over 37 yards. Rosecrans
bounced back later in the same
period as a Pete Clark to Joe
Tom Bramlish, Ex-Rosecrans
Ace, Wins 10 Games As A Pro
first. Besides his hurling chores,
the Bishop hurler hit three home
runs one a grand-slammer. He
took over first base duties during
the last two months of the season
when the team’s regular first base
man became ill and besides turn
ing in a first class fielding job he
hit 250.
While in high school, Bramlish
led the Bishops to the semifinals
in the state baseball tournament
by pitching and winning four
games in five days. Waverly, the
eventual state champs, finally oust
ed Rosecrans in the next-to-last
game.
The Cincinnati Redleg farmhand
lettered in football, basketball and
baseball at Rosecrans. He was nam
ed to the All-Diocesan basketball
team in 1954.
