Local Priest Aids in Arrest Of Swindler The aJerl eye of a local priest ended the 33-year long career of swindling for a 75 year-old flim-flam artist here last week. The pious looking character called at a local rectory and began his usual “pitch” seek ing work as a church janitor. The priest, recognizing him from “wanted pictures", found out where the man was living tempo rarily and asked him to return to the rectory at a later time. After the man had departed, the priest called police and a short time later the curtain rang down on Mr. John B. Sawey. Sawey is the latest name adopt ed by the slight, mild-mannered man. He has a string of aliases, Including Michael Murphy, Burke, O'Neil, Kelley or Sawyer. Needless to say, Sawey is a na tive of Ireland, having come to this country when he was a child. He began his life of chicanery In 1912. He has been a social worker, a U.S.O. man. church and charity worker, and claims mem bership in many religious societies. He can recite his prayerbook from memory. In one instance, he got the Bish ops secretary in an eastern dio cese tn introduce him to a local bank where he promptly cashed a worthless check. Recently he per petrated a $750 swindle on a Spo kane, Washington, priest. The Spo kane police sent a wanted picture throughout the country and that’s SINCE 1885 KELLY 2333 N. HIGH ST. His latest method of operation was to gain employment as a church janitor, then offering to buy the church some needed ma terial or furniture. Then, after gaining the confidence of the pas tor, he usually asked him tn co sign a check ranging from $300 $2500. To date, he has spent almost 35 years behind bars.
