Peron re vealed a drastic about-face in both his personal and official relations with the Catholic Church. When the Peron government came into power, it endors ed and supported the Church’s activities. However, in his drive for complete dictatorial pow-| er, Peron inevitably clashed with the Church. In 1944 while serving as Vice President in the government of President Edelmiro Farrell, Peron solemnly bestowed the insignia of General of the National Army on the venerated image of the Virgin del Carmen de Cuyo at Mendoza The act was performed in the pres ence of Bishop Alfonso M. Buteler of Mendoza. In 1946, the Peronist-controll ed congress officially approved reestablishment of compulsory religious instruction in the schools. Ecclesiastical advisors were named to various govern ment institutions. Furthermore, the Peron govern ment—in sharp contrast to the at titude of previous regimes—per mitted religious processions through the streets of Buenos Aires during Easter Week. During a celebration at the Franciscan monastery of San Car los in San Ixnenzo to commemor ate the 137th anniversary of the battle of San Lorenzo President Peron planted a shoot from a his toric pine tree on the monastery grounds. He attended a National Euchar isitc Congress held in Rosario in 1951. In 1953, President Peron read an invocation in Buenos Aires marking the solemn pontifical cor onation of a painting of Our Lady of Lujan by His Eminence San tiago Luis Cardinal Copello, Arch bishop of Buenos Aires, who serv ed as Papal Legate. Previously, Peron attended the closing of a National Congress of History in Santiago del Estero at which he delivered an address praising the humility and zeal of St. Francis Solano, the Peruvian missionary who evangelized the territory He told the assembled edu ators that “the greatest of na tions is measured by their number of virtuous men The same year. Peron, presented a gold crucifix to Father Alfonso Rodriquez Parracia, a former la 1 ‘4 i if w fl.' borer, who had been ordained in Santa Fe. Already, in 1947, Peron had ba an awarded the Greet Croat of the Order of Pius IX by His Holiness Pope Pius XII. It was not until 1954 that Peron embarked on the anti-Church cam paign that was to belie his boast, •‘I have never had any trouble with Christ,” and to bring him un der a formal excommunication pro nounced by the Vatican. Peron launched his anti-Church campaign last November with a ver bal blast against two Archbishops and a Bishop whom he charged with “intrigue” against the state. His attack on the three prelates, all of whom were active in pro moting his papal social encyclicals, was motivated by his determina tion to keep the labor movement in Argentina under his political control. Only a few months before. Peron had told a meeting of chemical workers that he was opposed to the formation of labor unions on “religious lines.” In the wake of Peron's Novem ber attack on the Bishops came the series of drastic anti-Church and anti-religious measures which created a great wave of resent ment and strengthened the deter mination of opposition elements to force him from office. It has long been a common say ing in Argentina that to “fight the Church’ is tantamount to commit ting political suicide. Peron has become a classic example of how true this is. Vietnam SAIGON, South Vietnam NC) The latest census of refugees from Communist held north Vietnam shows 535.014 civilian Catholics re settled in 234 refugee parishes the center and south. About one-fourth of these parochial units are in central Vietnam. The majority, 179, are within the limits of Saigon Vicariate. Every refugee parish has a church, usually a temporary struc ture but always the largest and one of the first built in the vil lage. Some refugee groups are al ready dismantling their first tem porary churches and are building latge brick churches. Two of the refugee parishes have more than 13,000 Catholics each. The census was made under the direction of Bishop Peter-Pham Ngoc Chi, Vicar Apostolic of Bui chu, head of the Catholic Commit tee for Refugees. The 234 refuge* parishes are served by 457 of the 617 refugee Vietnamese diocesan priests, with a few Vietnamese priests of religious orders and 6 foreign missionaries. It is estimated that 60,000 or 70,000 refugees are dispersed in Saigon and other urban areas. These would include Protestants and Buddhists as well as Catholics. Most of Vietnam’s small Protestant population (estimated at about 30. 000) already lived south of the 17th parallel, dividing line between the Communist-Vietminh zone and the free zone. -------------------o------------------- Medical Mission Sisters Plan for 30th Anniversary PHILADELPHIA (NC)—Med ical Mission Sisters in 33 centers scattered around the world will ob serve the 30th anniversary of the establishment of their congrega tion on Friday, Sept. 30.
