The number of diocesan clergy In Australia rose from 1.865 to 1,919 and in New Zealand from 370 to 390 Priest* of religious order* in Discuss Plans to Build New' Guadalupe Basilica MEXICO CITY—(NC)—Plans to build a new basilica at the shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe are be ing discussed here. The new church would replace the present structure, completed in 1836. which has been seriously damaged by shifts in its founda tion. Nuns in Australia and New Zealand number 12,177 and 2,399 re spectively. Pupils attending Catholic schools in Australia rose from 302,136 to 320,662 and in New Zealand from 43,648 to 46,466, The statistics show that there are 36 seminaries with 1.386 stu dents in Australia, while 314 stu dents attend the four seminaries in Neu Zealand There are eight university colleges, 126 boys' secondary schools and 241 girls' secondary schools, educating 63,630 pupil* throughout Australia. In New Zealand there are one universi ty college, 23 boys' secondary schools and 46 girls' secondary schools with a total enrollment of 8,432 students. While board members said they agree with the Council that children need more weekday religious training, they took the stand that it is not the responsi bility of thp public schools to pro vide the time for such a pro gram.
