Sydney, Australia (NC) The Catholic population
of Australia rose by 42.491 during 1955 to a total of 1.596.
863, or 17.5 per cent of the nation’s population
Catholics in New Zealand increased to a total of 260.

in the Australian Catholic Direc
tory for 1956
In Australia 42 new churches
were opened to bring the Com
monwealth figure »n 2.535 and in
New Zealand another 18 new
churches brought the total to 502.

1,919 and in New Zealand from

The statistics show that there
are 36 seminaries with 1.386 stu
dents in Australia, while 314 stu
dents attend the four seminaries
in Neu Zealand
There are eight university
colleges, 126 boys' secondary
schools and 241 girls' secondary
schools, educating 63,630 pupil*
throughout Australia. In New
Zealand there are one universi
ty college, 23 boys' secondary
schools and 46 girls' secondary
schools with a total enrollment
of 8,432 students.

diocese.
Other events announced by the
Bishop include a Summer School
of Catholic Action which will be
conducted at Windsor from June
25 to 30. the first to be held in
the province of Ontario and the
second in Canada
Father Patrick Peyton, CSC.,
internationally-known Family
Rosary Crusader, will return to
the diocese.
The date of the liturgical con
vention at London has been set
for August 20 to 23. and the Dio
cesan Eucharistic Congress will
be held at St. Peter’s Seminary,
Windsor.

School Board Rejects
Released Time Plans
OKLAHOMA CITY (NC) In an unexpected deci
sion, the Oklahoma City school board turned down the city
Council of Churches' plan for a released time program of
religious education classes for public school students dur
ing school hours.
While board members said they agree with the Council
that children need more weekday
religious training, they took the
stand that it is not the responsi
bility of thp public schools to pro
vide the time for such a pro
gram.
Announcement of the board’s
unanimous decision came at the
close of the board’s 1956 organ)
zation meeting, at which newly
elected members took the oath
of offfice

board’s action shortly after tak
ing over as president.
“For the past several weeks we
have beeri discussing the matter
of released time for religious edu
cation.” he said. "There was a
very thorough discussion of it to
day at which time we gave both
sides an opportunity to be heard.
"Oddly enough, there was no
difference of opinion regarding
the matter of religious educa
tion. Everyone was agreed as to
the need,” he continued. “But the
only matter presented to the
board was that time for it be re
leased from the school program

that the plan be denied and time
not released
