Born and reared on the near North Side, he attended St, Patrick's School, and began his studies for the priesthood at St. Aloysiu* Seminary, the pres ent site of Holy Family School. He completed his theological studies at Niagara University, and was ordained by Bishop Watterson on July 10, 1882, in St. Joseph Cathedral. Following ordination, he was assigned to parish work in Steu benville.
