OHIO REDDING CO PAH SOM fiadiaios, Cabineta CUSTOM MADE This is a picture 6f most of us. We love Our Lord too much not to follow Him but we drag our feet when we see Him drag a Cross. Fear of sacrifice is what makes us linger back. The hattie with the flesh was as keen in the apostles as it is in us. But let us not be discour aged. These same apostles who fell behind and walked reluct antly were later on to be the ones who would follow Him to death and Peter, who tempted Him away from the Cross, would ask to be crucified up side down. We need not doubt our dis cipleship because we are afraid to make a sacrifice, or fearful that if we cut into our capital to spread the love of the Cross in Japan or India, that we will not have enough for the fu ture. There can be fear in our steps, but fidelity in our hearts. Even when we ask you to make a sacrifice which we send to the Holy Father—do not think you lack faith because you are afraid to do it, the apostles were afraid too. but they “came through.” So, will you? His Eminence Manuel Card inal Arteaga y Betancourt. Archbishop of Havana, wrote in a pastoral letter published here. The letter was issued as government-appointed commit tees are studying the question of education reform laws. The Cardinal expressed the hope that the reforms would pro vide for the introduction of relig ion classes in the country's pub lic schools, which are completely secular at the present time. Most children in Cuba, wnere the popu lation is approximately 75 per cent Catholic, attend public schools. Fewer than 12 per cent of primary and secondary school students arc in Catholic schools cation, there are school facili ties for only 50,000. To help remedy this situation he urged the government to foster the establishment of new private schools, especially in smaller towns. Regarding religion courses the Cardinal wrote: “We do not want to let this opportunity pass without express ing the ardent hope that some day the right of parents to have their children receive religious instruction and education in pub lic schools will bp acknowledged in Cuba in a democratic spirit. “The secular schools need not necessarily be atheistic, as many erroneously believe, and banish God’s name from the schools and in many cases from the minds and hearts of children.” -------------------o-------------I— Defend me from my friends I can defend myself from my enemies. This aphorism has been variously ascribed to several au thors, notably, but erroneously, to Voltaire 11 probably originat ed in France and dates back at least to the 17th century. Jt. JI Parents Warned About Protestant School Rulings BARRANQUILLA. Colombia (NC) Bishop Francisco Gallego Perez of Barranquilla has warned the parents in his diocese that they cannot send their children to Protestant schools. The so-called American schools “have sometimes constituted a serious danger to the faith and the Christian formation of our youth.” the Bishop said in a pas toral letter. He indicated further that in re stricting enrollment to those who “can register as non-Catholics,” the American Protestant schools in Barranquilla are inviting apostasy. LA PAZ. Bolivia (NC) The Catholic weekly, Presencia. as serted that the American Insti tute here has taken advantage of the scarcity of schools to oblige all its students to take part in Methodist services. Presencia said in front page article that 98 per cent of the students are baptized Catho lics. Nevertheless, it said, the directors of the institute, which offers much-sought-for English courses, recently asked all par ents to give written permission for their children to receive Methodist instruction, and an nounced that non-Protestants would be expelled. -------------------o------------------- How ran you fail to make the kale?
